Epilogue
LateJanuary
Gunnar held his son in his arms for thelongest time while Anna Claire slept. Ransom Chase Morgan, or RC asthey’d begun to call him, was only a month old, but he’d alreadycaptured everyone’s heart. His mate had named her first cub afterthe cousin she’d loved so dearly.
In the past two years, they’d been throughso much, and bringing this new life into the world had made Gunnarfeel complete. The birthing experience had been scary, as the malesof the clan always delivered their own cubs. His father had taughtthem everything they needed to know as soon as they’d come of ageto mate. The things he didn’t know or had questions about over thecourse of her labor, his brothers had given him guidance.
With the next several weeks of hibernation,he would take turns with their cub as his mate slept. As it was, helet her sleep as much as she needed because of the stress on herbody from bringing him into the world.
RC was born on the human’s Christmas Day,and even though the shifters didn’t celebrate the holiday, Gunnarknew there was something special about his cub. He was bigger thanexpected, and even the healer had advised once, “Wow, your cub willbe a fighter.”
Gunnar had felt pride that day. They’d goneahead and found out the sex, because, to be honest, he couldn’twait, and neither could his mate. Although they knew, Anna Clairewas to pick out the cub’s name, and she did a fine job of givingtheir cub an honorable one.
“Your cousin would have approved of you,”Gunnar said as the cub began to fuss. “You need your mama. Let’s gowake her up.”
Anna Claire must’ve heard RC fussing. Afemale’s ability to know the sound of their cub was fascinating tohim, and the care she took with him was naturally born into theshifters.
Family was everything to them, and over thesummer and fall, they’d come to include the panthers in some oftheir gatherings. Although times were tough in the human world, andthe panthers were working with the government now, a few of themwould stop by occasionally to check on the lands while they were inhibernation.
Two weeks after the first of June, thesheriff had stopped by the clan to inform them a human male hadfinally been captured by a grizzly clan outside of Salt Lake City,Utah. He had been identified as the hacker who’d started the waragainst the shifters. The sheriff didn’t have much informationother than the threat had been taken out and the message boards hadbeen removed. Gunnar was grateful it’d been stopped before anyoneelse had been killed. All the shifters ever wanted to do was livein peace.
Gunnar was thankful for the friendshipsthey’d built with the panthers, and he was more than excited forwhat that meant for his clan. They’d come together because of AnnaClaire, and as horrific as their first encounter had been, Gunnarwas glad he had been there the day she was freed from her fatherand his reign. He’d taken it upon himself to heal the female, promising to love her until they found themselves in theafterlife…and then he’d love her for the rest of eternity.
