look bigger.

“Enjoy them now, honey,” said Susan. “Soon they’re going to be mom tits.”

“Mine too!” said Marci, almost gleefully.

“They’ll be even more lovely.” I said. I truly felt they would be.

“Oh fuck. That didn’t feel good” said Marci, proving she was not a fan of childbirth, even with an epidural. The nursed rolled her eyes as she had informed Marci she shouldn’t be feeling anything.

“The doctor, who had been hovering, did a quick check, then left to see about his other patient. I followed him into Susan’s delivery room. Compared to Marci, Susan was an oasis of calm. Her waters broke eight hours after Marci’s, but the former now seemed closer to delivering.

“How’s Marci doing?” she asked.

“As well as could be expected.”

The doctor checked Susan and then consulted with her nurse. The nurse left and the doctor turned to me. Being the professional he was, he had already acclimated to our peculiar situation. Apparently, he’d never delivered two babies by two different women sharing the same seed donor at the same time.

“We’re calling in Dr. Scholtz. They’re both about to blow, if you know what I mean.”

That was one way of putting it.

“He’s already here, fortunately.”

Once the new doctor arrived I returned to Marci, who was exhibiting even further distress.

“What did you do? Step out for a drink? Jesus. I’m having your baby here!”

The nurse gave me look. This one had not quite acclimated to our situation.

“We’ve got two doctors now. It’s look like you’re both ready to deliver.”

“No kidding… OH FUCK! Hold my hand.” She squeezed it. “Fuck! I think I pooped!”

“You didn’t poop,” said the nurse. “You’re doing fine.”

Twenty minutes past.

A sixth sense alerted me to yet another new nurse saying my name.

“Mr. Peterson? Mr. Peterson?”

I looked toward the doorway.

“Your wife needs you. It’s happening.”

“Oh God, Ryan. Susan’s having her baby! GO! GO! GO!”

I bolted from the room, slipping a bit due to my footies, which really needed more grip. I landed in Susan’s room just as the blessed event was occuring. Within moments, it seemed, and far faster than I would have thought possible, I was a father. Within a few minutes more, my new son, after a brief stop for a clean up and tests involving needle pricks, which didn’t go over well, was lying on Susan’s chest.

They both looked beautiful. Susan, perspiring, with matted hair and broken blood vessels lining her cheeks, couldn’t have looked lovelier. After a few gentle moments of quiet wonder, I was able to hold him. He seemed far too young to be out so late. As I bonded with him, another fresh nurse arrived, one who also wasn’t current with the the particulars of the Peterson household, to tell me my wife was about to deliver. To say she looked confused would be an understatement.

“How is she? Is it a girl? A boy? OH FUCK!” said Marci, in that order, as soon as I arrived.

“Push,” said the doctor.

Marci pushed. Soon, the room’s tension evaporated as Marci delivered a beautiful little girl.

Her excitement made her an unruly patient. She was ready to bounce out of bed to hold our new baby.

“Steady girl,” said the doctor. “We’ve not finished here.”

After the quick clean up and inspection, our daughter was delivered to Marci, who cried like a school girl as she inspected her.

“Jesus, Ryan. Isn’t she gorgeous?”

Just like Susan, she looked like the happiest person in the world. They were in a tie finish as the world’s most beautiful mothers.

They would soon be sharing a room for the night. Until then, I was going back and forth like a spinning top.

When I returned once more to Marci, her eyes were closed. She opened them when she heard me next to her bed.

“Hi,” she said, smiling. “Look at this!” She pulled down the thin baby blanket covering our daughter’s head. She had taken the nipple.

I watched our daughter suckle, and I felt yet another wave of overpowering love the likes of which I’d never known.

“We did the right thing, didn’t we?” Marci asked.

“We did.”

“No matter what anyone says, I’m your wife, along with Susan. Forever, Ryan. You have to know that.”

“I do know that, though you were a great vacation wife too. I have to hand it to you.”

“Yeah, well, see where it got you?”

I did, and I couldn’t have been happier.
