model their unwavering support for my own children. My brother and sister-in-law, my husband’s family, our nieces and nephews, my extended relations near and far: I thank you for everything, especially the laughter when I needed it. My children, Maya and Gavin, make me proud every day, and I hope that when they’re older they’ll read this book and understand what all the “Shhh, Mommy’s writing” was about.

Much of The Hidden Palace was written and edited in 2020, a year when all normalcy and routine were thrown out the window. If this book succeeds at all in its finished form, it’s in no small part thanks to my husband, who took over the household and our kids’ distance learning while I sequestered myself with the manuscript. Kareem, first and best reader of my heart, I am forever grateful for you.
