John Newton was a slave trader who had a dramatic conversion to Christianity, after which he studied to be a minister. He was then appointed to the rural parish of Olney, a community largely inhabited by the impoverished and uneducated.
There he met William Cowper, an eminent poet who had moved to Olney after a bout of severe depression led him to convert to evangelical Christianity. He and Newton became friends, and Newton invited him to contribute to a hymnbook he was writing.
