Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was an abolitionist poet active in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As a traveling lecturer for the American Anti-Slavery Society, Harper agitated for the emancipation of enslaved people before the American Civil War and afterwards worked in the South as a teacher during Reconstruction.
