Description

Look Homeward, Angel, Thomas Wolfe’s debut novel, is a coming-of-age novel that follows the life of Oliver Gant and his family in the fictional town of Altamont, North Carolina. The story begins with Oliver’s early years, capturing the struggles of post-Civil War Southern life. Later, the focus shifts to Eugene, Oliver’s son, an aspiring writer torn between his artistic ambition and his small-town roots.

The novel is a foundational work of Southern American literature, considered by many a viable contender for the “Great American Novel.” Wolfe drew extensively from his personal experiences growing up in Asheville, North Carolina, and many of the themes of Wolfe’s own life—like family, identity, and artistic exploration—are reflected in Eugene’s struggles.

The novel was the result of close collaboration between Wolfe and his editor at Scribner’s, Maxwell Perkins. Perkins helped distill Wolfe’s original manuscript from an unwieldy 300,000 words to a publishable state, cutting 60,000 words and shifting the primary focus to Eugene.

Ketti Frings created a critically acclaimed Broadway adaptation of Look Homeward, Angel, which premiered in 1957 and ran for 564 performances. Her theatrical adaptation won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received multiple Tony Award nominations across various categories.
