DSIT was the Daily Shipping Information and Tracking. One of a bundled package of databases available for a very expensive yearly fee.

“That explains it.” She found her way to the DSIT site, using her own password to get on. After a moment, she held the screen out to Quinn. “There. See?”

He looked at the displayed information. It was for the Riegle 3. The date was the date Quinn had been hired to bury Markoff.

“Origin: Shanghai,” he said. “Dammit.”

It was an easy mistake. Origin did not mean what port the ship had last sailed from, but what port the ship called home. In this case, Shanghai. He tried to remember if he’d explained that part clearly to Nate, but he didn’t know.

Orlando scrolled over, then stopped. There, in a column labeled PP for Previous Port, was the location the Riegle 3 had stopped in just prior to sailing to Los Angeles.

Quinn could feel a tingling at the back of his neck. Singapore.

“What?” Orlando asked.

“That guy I met with at the congressman’s office,” Quinn said. “Dylan Ray. He said Guerrero was going to be in Singapore next week.”

“Why?”

Quinn closed his eyes, remembering the conversation. “Some sort of information-gathering trip. Fact-finding, I think he called it. About security.”

“Is he going alone or with a congressional committee?”

“I don’t know.”

“So you’re convinced the congressman has something to do with Jenny’s disappearance?”

Quinn frowned. “He has to be involved. The same men who were with him in Georgetown were the ones I saw in Houston. And when I talked to him, I could tell he was hiding something. I can’t put it all together yet, but either he’s responsible for what’s happened to her, or at least he knows.”

She nodded her head. “I could...you know...I could look into it.”

“You’ve got other things to worry about. I’ll have Nate do it.”

He tried to take his cell from her, but she wouldn’t let go. “I need something to distract me,” she said, her eyes dead serious. “I can...

even poke around on that LP thing, too.”

They stared at each other for a moment, then he said, “All right.”

“Good,” she said. She held out his phone. “You can have it back now.”

He took it from her and slipped it into his pocket.

They started walking again, both quietly sipping their drinks and saying nothing. At the next intersection, they stopped at the corner, waiting for the light to change.

“Before I go digging too much, are you sure this is something you want to get involved in?” Orlando asked. “I know Markoff was your friend. And I know you are trying to do the right thing by telling Jenny what happened. But this looks like it’s getting deep. You could be getting yourself into something that’s not worth the trouble.”

Quinn’s jaw tensed. “Wouldn’t be the first time.”

“That’s kind of why I’m bringing it up. Last time was a riot. You sure you can handle that kind of fun again?”

You can never fully repay someone who has saved your life.

“I can handle it.”

“This isn’t your game. You can just walk away.”

“You know I can’t do that,” he said with a finality he hoped would get her to change the subject.

“Because of Markoff?” she said.

Quinn took a deep breath. There were only a handful of people in the world Quinn would drop everything for, and do whatever he could to help them. Even posthumously. Markoff was number two on that list. Quinn was talking with number one.

“I don’t really have a choice,” he said. “I owe him.”

The look she gave him surprised Quinn. It was almost as if he had said anything else, she would have been disappointed.

“Then neither do I.”

“You know, you’re right. This could be a lot of trouble. You don’t need to help me out. I’ll take care of it.”

She laughed. “Like you could stop me now.”

“Orlando,” he said, “this is personal for me. Not for you. You don’t need to get involved.”

She laid a hand on his arm, and her eyes locked on his. “Last winter, when everything seemed lost, when...Durrie had taken my son. That was personal, too. But you were there for me.”

There was more she didn’t have to say. He knew she felt as he did. That whatever the problem either of them had, this is what they did for each other. They were there for the other one. Always.
