Гессен полагал, что «Розыскание...» написано не Далем, а директором департамента иностранных исповеданий Скрипицыным или генерал-майором Каменским ([Гессен Ю., Вишницер М., Карпин А.] «Записка о ритуальных убийствах»... С. 30-31). Однако аргументы Гессена нельзя признать достаточно вескими. Дандес ошибочно полагает, что работа Даля «основана на полевой работе среди так называемых старообрядцев» (с. 346), однако на самом деле в «Розыскании...» используются отечественные и западные публикации XVII—XIX вв., а также следственные материалы по велижскому делу.
