С принятием Закона о защите пациентов и доступном медицинском обслуживании в 2010 году отказ в предоставлении услуг страховой медицины в связи с ранее выявленным хроническим заболеванием стал противозаконным. Однако с учетом масштабов сферы здравоохранения (это 17 процентов ВВП США, или 3 триллиона долларов), в постоянных нарушениях этого закона нет ничего удивительного. Полагаю, что пройдет еще минимум десять лет, прежде чем люди перестанут опасаться отказа в предоставлении услуг страховой медицины из-за наличия хронического заболевания.

Закон об унификации и учете в области медицинского страхования 1996 года (HIPAA) стал первой попыткой стандартизации средств коммуникации и защиты медицинской информации в США.
