I trust you all understand that.” He stopped talking for his words to settle in. “And I’ll tell you this: I guarantee there are other closeted gay or bisexual officers, and sometimes, the biggest complainers of out gays are gay themselves and can’t admit it. Give that some thought, folks.”

The briefing formally began, roll was called, and at the end, the deputy chief repeated his lecture for everyone in the room. As they say, you could have heard a pin drop. After everyone was dismissed, a few officers patted Norris and Dino on the back. Others shook their hands, and, of course, many ignored them.

Norris sighed and said to Dino, “Didn’t Sergeant Patton tell us not to come out in briefing? Damn it, Dino, you never learn.” He kissed Dino’s cheek. “Let’s go catch some crooks.”

David was born in the industrial area of New Jersey, across the river from New York City. He grew up in a prejudiced society where unless you were a white male you were third or fourth class. He moved to California in high school and went on to become a police officer for 29 years in San Jose.
