Lee andTravis were quickly coming up behind me and were firing at the zombies nowcoming out of my house. They overtook me and entered my home as Will helped me up, handed me a baseball bat and followed meinside.
The fightthat we put up against the zombies in and up the stairs was like a dream, Ijust couldn’t wait to get upstairs to my family. The last Zombie Will had takenout was Poppy’s teacher from school, Mrs. Hoocher. Iliked the lady and was sad that they had gotten to her too. Her left side wasthe most damaged with most of the flesh her neck and arm, missing. Her clotheshung in tatters and for some reason this was what bothered me the most,probably because she was always so smart in life. I couldn’t really do mushfighting with the bat as there was no room to swing it.
I got tothe top of the stairs and waited on the soldiers to clear our other rooms, Willand Adam stood behind me.
“Kelly? Canyou hear me? It’s George!” I called banging the door.
“Excuse usGeorge,” Lee said as he and Travis broke the door.
Then we hadto use all of our strength to move the furniture behind it, I could see thekids, cuddled together on the bed, sleeping next to Kelly.
“Poppy,Cam? Daddy’s home!”
We finallymanaged to push through enough for me to get into the room.
I ran toKelly as Will ran to the children to pick them up, ready to get them out ofthis hell hole.
“Kelly, I’mhome baby, I’m home, I’ve missed you so much.” I cried shaking her a little.
Shestirred. “George? I’m sorry,” she whispered before passing out.
“Kelly?No!” I called.
Lee pushedme out of the way and felt her pulse. “She still has a pulse but we need to gether out of here and back to the base, quickly.” He picked her up easily andcarried her quickly out of the room.
I turned toWill and Adam to see why they had not yet taken the children out of here and tothe car.
Somethingwas wrong, both Will and Adam had tears in their eyes and their faces wet withthem. Will held Poppy in his arms and Cameron was still on the bed, Adam satnext to him, holding a letter.
“Will?” Mywhole body was shaking
“I’m sorryman, they’re gone.” His voice broke and he fell to his knees, still holdingPoppy close to him.
“No!” Icalled running around the bed, I ripped Poppy out of his arms and shook her alittle.
“Poppy, itsdaddy, I’m here baby, I’m back, please Poppy, please,” I begged, tearsstreaming down my face, I had never felt pain like this before. I mimickedLee’s earlier actions and tried to find her pulse, but there was none to find.
“No, no,no, no.” I looked at Adam who brought the body of my son to me.
I cuddledPoppy into one side of me and Cameron into the other and rocked back and fore.I cried and kissed their faces all over, begging them to forgive me for notbeing there with them and for not returning sooner.
Lee cameback in and whispered something to Will and Adam with all three of them givingme anxious looks, I couldn’t care what they were talking about, my world hadjust collapsed, I was numb, I wanted to die. This was it, rock bottom itcouldn't get any worse than this.
“Uh,George, I am so, so sorry. Would you like to go back to the car whilst I takecare of your angels for you?” Lee knelt down in front of me and was talkingvery softly, his face was full of sadness and pity.
“I, I wantto die with them, just let me be,” I begged them.
“No George,you need to go on, we need you back at base, Kelly is going to need you.” Adamtried to reason with me.
“George, wedon’t know how long it’s been…” Will said in a whisper
I knew thathe was warning me that my children could rise again at any moment, I couldn’t barefor that to happen. My babies needed to rest in peace.
I startedto nod my head. “Ok, ok, Will I, thanks.” I handed Poppy to him gently andnodded to Adam who took Cameron off me. Walking into Poppy’s room I picked upone of her stuffed teddies and one of Cameron’s toy cars that he had left inthere placing them into the pocket of my trousers.
I lay onPoppy’s bed wrapping myself up in her sheets, I placed the barrel of the gun tomy head.
“I’m sorry,Poppy, Cam, Kelly, I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you. My babiesrest in peace, knowing that nothing can hurt you ever again, Daddy will be withyou soon”
The gunshotwas so loud it rang out through the house.
