"How did you..." He started to ask.
I cut him off with a kiss. His lips moved against mine desperately. When we broke apart we were both panting. This was more real than real. Everything here was heightened. I laughed at the overload of emotion and sensation. It was like I had never lived before this moment.
"Will you move in with me?" I joked.
"If I could be so lucky," He returned my laughter. We kissed again. It was a hungry kiss. There was a large feather bed in the castle waiting for us, but I had one thing to take care of first. I could feel another thread pulling at me. Waiting for an answer. Lucian.
I turned to Kairn, "This shrine should allow you to move around in the liminal world at will. We will be together." I smiled, staring at his wild and glorious face. "But there is something I have to do." He nodded.
My mentor Lucian was standing on the edge of the vale. I walked over to him.
"It's time isn't it?" I asked. He smiled at me with a bittersweet look in his eyes.
"Do you think you're ready for this?" He asked.
"I think it's time to find out," I said, feeling both heaviness and a sense of excitement.
"I'm ready to go on. I've been here for so long." He said and I understood perfectly because I could see his life stretched out on the tapestry before me.
"I know," I whispered, and I hugged him. He had taught me a lot whether he knew it or not. The liminal world was surrounded by gates, I couldn't feel them before, but now they were very clear to me. "It's time to open the gates."
I pushed with every ounce of power I had, and the gates swung wide open. Lucian dissolved before me and I could see beyond the gates, but just barely. There were vague colors and outlines. I knew that there were others who needed to move on. I untangled the threads of so many lives and sent them on their way. It was a heavy burden to bear, but It was my destiny. As Lucian moved to the beyond, I whispered a blessing over him, and he was gone. That was the way of things. I vowed that day, never to let the gates be shut to any who sought their final destination.
The End.
