We both love movies and grunge music from the 90s. I’m not big into weights, but I do run a few times a week, so we’ve done that together, which is fun. We usually play in the pool at night, which also usually ends up with us “playing” in the pool, and even if we’re just sitting on a lounge chair together and staring up at the stars, I’ve had some of the most interesting conversations with him about anything and everything.
There are so many more layers to Devin “All-American” Adler than I ever expected. Which is why I’m going to miss this--miss him--once he leaves. But we were never meant to be more than temporary. Sure, our passion is intense and our chemistry is insane, but that’s not something you base a longterm relationship on. Besides, he’ll be at Notre Dame in another month and hopefully I’ll get good news about that job I interviewed for. I know Devin’s going to go on to do great things someday, and I couldn’t be happier for him.
At least, that’s what I keep telling myself. Maybe I’ll even believe it one of these times.
“You look way too serious for this early in the morning.”
He slides his arms around my waist and I naturally relax into his chest and push my fingers into the back of his hair. “And what exactly does too serious look like on me?”
His thumb rubs the spot between my eyebrows. “When you think too much, you get a wrinkle above the bridge of your nose.”
I gasp dramatically. “Is that some kind of crack about my old age?”

As I watch my new students file into the classroom and take their seats, I feel a strange mix of excitement and sadness. I was thrilled to learn I got the job I interviewed for as the economics professor at the nearby community college. Although I’d enjoyed teaching at Daley High, they still didn’t have anything permanent for me. This is an easy commute, the pay is better, and most importantly, it’s a full-time position.
But the first day of school brings to mind thoughts of a particular student who’s experiencing his first day of college, far away at Notre Dame. I never realized how much I looked forward to seeing Devin in my classroom every day until now. That week in July was easily the most phenomenal of my adult life. I’ve thought about the things we did so many times I’m surprised I haven’t burned the memories up from overuse. But all good things must come to an end, and we knew going in that one week was all either of us could give.
I smooth my hands over the front of my pencil skirt and hope I don’t look as nervous as I feel. This classroom is much bigger than what I’ve taught in before, complete with stadium seating. Don’t think about it, just do your thing and don’t let them see you sweat. Be confident. Take charge.
