that I was sure Harper had something to do with it. I really thought she was sending us around to make us look like assholes.”

My blood boils and my hands fist on the table. “But now?” I ask through clenched teeth.

“We followed the realtor, she dropped something in the mail. We waited until she left and grabbed it. It was a letter written to her ex-husband, telling him how she’s got the Shattered Souls by the balls and is going to take us down. We looked into it and guess who it was? Fucking Axel Bishop,” Enzo explains.

We all start to laugh and finally Brooks is a little more like his normal asshole self. I think of Axel Bishop. He was a member and left because Brooks threatened to beat his ass for not wanting to do things with us. He thought we would just sit around, drink, and get pussy. Once he realized it was more than that, he left. Scared, he moved out of state. Obviously we know where, but he’s no threat. His ex-wife was probably trying to get him back or some shit. But with the realization, a bit of weight is lifted off my shoulders.

“I’m sorry, Z,” Brooks says, slapping me on the shoulder.

I don’t say anything, just give a shake of my head. They all continue talking, but I’m no longer paying attention. I figure now that Brooks got that off his chest, he’ll give Harper a little respect. Something that will make her feel like she belongs. Without it, we’ll never get anything from her.

“We’re hiring a new realtor, but I figured Porter and Alex might like to go tell Mrs. Bishop she’s fired.”

Fired, dead, same thing. I’m just glad it wasn’t me he asked. I still want to take Harper to my mom’s and considering we’ve been at this table for a few hours already, I’d like to get back to her.

After Brooks tells us to leave, I grab Kace in the hallway and pin him with my hard gaze. “What the fuck?”

“If I told you, you would’ve gone in there gun drawn. I had to get him to admit everything,” he says.

“So you fucking knew?”

“No, but I knew something was up. I figured if I could get him to admit he thought it was Harper, maybe you could at the very least beat the truth out of him,” he says with a chuckle.

“You’re an asshole,” I say, pushing him as I walk by. “Fucking smart though,” I toss over my shoulder as I go back to Harper.

When I enter the room, she’s freshly showered and dressed. My dick throbs when I see her. She’s got on tight jeans with rips in all the right places, a black shirt that only has one arm, and heels that make her legs look even longer. Her brown hair is down her back in waves, her blue eyes pop against her makeup, but it’s her sexy grin that finishes it off.

I rush to her and pull her in my arms. “You look hot,” I whisper, biting her ear.

“We need to talk,” she says, digging her fingers into my chest.

I pull back and her eyes bounce between mine. “What’s up?”

She pushes up on her toes and her lips gently touch mine. “I’m gonna stay here for a while. If that’s alright with you.”

“Babe, you don’t need to ask me. I’d like you here always.” I kiss her full lips, but pull back. “What’s going on?”

She smiles, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “Nothing, I just want to spend more time with you. If it’s a big deal, I’ll stay at my place.” She pulls out of my grip and walks over to the chair to sit down.

“I just said I want you here, it’s just a surprise is all. But I’ve told you from the beginning I’d rather have you coming,” I say, slowly making my way toward her.

She lightly laughs and stands. “Do you have plans today?”

I want to push her, ask her what the fuck is going on. She’s avoiding me and my questions. I don’t like that shit. It means she’s hiding something. But, I figure I’ll give her the day and tonight, I’ll force her to talk.

“We have plans today. We’re going to my mom’s for dinner. I just need to grab a quick shower and we’ll head over.”

We haven’t said much since we left the club. She’s unusually quiet and it’s giving me a bad feeling. I grab her hand when we get to my mom’s door and pull her to me. “I’m giving you the day, but tonight, we’re gonna talk.”

Before she can say anything, my mom opens the door. “Thank fuck,” she mumbles.

“Hey, Adalyn, how are you?” Harper asks, pulling my mom in for a hug.

“Better now that you guys are here. Being stuck here with members and prospects, is not my idea of fun.”

We push inside and I close the door. “It’s for your protection, Ma.”

“I know,” she says, wrapping her arms around me. “My sweet boy.”

We move into the kitchen and she tells us to sit down. After pouring us all coffee, checking on the roast she has in the oven, and giving a water to Finn, telling him to go sit outside, she sits down.

I laugh and wrap my arm around the back of Harper’s chair. “Ma, relax.”

She looks at my arm and back at me. “What’s going on with you two?”

I feel Harper stiffen at my side and I rub her shoulder with my thumb. “We’re together.”

The surprised look on her face quickly turns to sadness. “You both know how dangerous this is. I know you have a connection, but have you thought it through?”

Harper surprises me by talking first. “Adalyn, I can’t speak for Zane, but as for me, I know the coincidences.” She looks at me and her eyes soften. “I also know that I tried to stay away and it’s impossible. My life isn’t worth living without him.”

“You’ll both be
