or hurt, on the contrary. For the first time since her life had been turned upside down, something steadied inside her, as if a void were slowly being filled with warm fizzy water.

Then, she put her finger on the stone and let it flow.

It wasn’t identical to her power as a witch, but she got the gist of it, and a door appeared. Not her best work, but she’d never been so proud in her life.

“Hell, you did it. Your powers are back! You’re a witch again.”

Was she? Violet didn’t want to think about it. With a hand on the knob, she forced herself to smile. “I don’t know, but there’s only one way to get that answer.”

Willing or not, they both crossed the threshold.

Chapter 16

When they stepped into Violet’s little cottage, the sudden change of scenery made Finn queasy, if that was possible for a vampire.

His own internal clock settled when he realized they’d been lost in the labyrinth for almost twelve hours. No wonder Violet had bags under her eyes and he was ravenous.

As an old creature, he didn’t have to feed as often as young ones, but that didn’t mean he could delay indefinitely. A quick scan of the area told him that Sentinels were still around, which meant he’d be able to leave Violet alone for a while. If he could, because the moment they’d returned, his instincts pressed at him to stay close to her. At first glance, there was nothing wrong with her physically. It was obvious that tiredness pulled at her, but something shivered around the edges, a change he could almost see. The ghoul had told them that darkness would inevitably take her, but Finn couldn’t accept it. Violet was a fighter and wouldn’t accept any power or curse taking over her life and soul. Also, he’d stay by her side until everything was sorted out; that was the promise he’d made.

Violet looked around seeming a little lost before she told him she was going to take a shower.

“You should eat, and I need to feed. I’ll tell the Sentinels to get your car since we left it in town and to bring food.”

Violet nodded and even forced a smile, but Finn wasn’t stupid. What they’d learned inside that cave had shaken her, and that seeming inevitable fate had colored her eyes with a hint of sorrow.

When she closed the bathroom door behind her, Finn knew he had things to do, people to call, including their friends at Sanctuary, but he remained there, glued to the floor.

The shower started, and he stayed, unmoving, until he heard a cry and a sob. He’d stepped inside the steaming room before his brain realized what he was doing.

Violet wasn’t in the shower but stood by the mirror, looking at her hip. The anguish on her face was from examining the ink patch they’d discovered earlier, but now, it had significantly expanded and shifted. The black mark was making its way over her ribcage and down to her thigh, but the strange thing was, the center of it, where it had appeared first, was back to her normal pale skin.

Finn took the witch in his arms, and she let him, hanging onto him like he was the only buoy in a raging sea.

“It’s taking me, and soon, as Abrams said, I will no longer be.”

A growl almost broke free, but he just reined himself in as she didn’t need him losing his temper at her words “No. You’ll always and forever be Violet, with the fiery hair, the quick wit, and courageous soul. We’ll find a solution. I know it.” Lacking words, he let his body speak for him and kissed her.

Maybe it wasn’t appropriate behavior from a human point of view, but he only wanted to convey his conviction and his trust in her abilities. Realizing he may be pushing her the wrong way, he moved to step back and leave, but the red-haired vixen decided otherwise. This time, she was the one who kept him in place with her arms around his torso and her mouth seductively opening to him. Finn wanted to ask if she was okay with this, but her tongue tracing his lips and sliding into his mouth was confirmation enough for him.

Her kiss grew impatient when he removed his sweater, and he cursed into her mouth when her hand squeezed his cock over the fabric of his pants. Her only answer was a precious laugh he quickly swallowed.

His desire for her had always been strong, but seeing her taking charge like that, expressing how much she wanted him, almost made him combust. If she wanted hard and fast, he would give it to her, rip all that pleasure out of her until she could only scream his name.

Before he could get his hands on her, she ran her soft lips and inquisitive hands all over his body, descending over his ripped stomach, nipping at him. As she teased, her fingers worked on his pants with haste until she freed his erection.

Hard wasn’t the right word to define how he felt. His sex throbbed almost to the point of pain, his heavy sack tightening in anticipation as Violet glanced up at him. The first lick of her tongue on the underside of his cock was almost enough to get him off. Her cool hand closing around the base, she repeated her caress over and over again until she formed an O with her perfect mouth and took him in.

Finn knew he should be the one in control, it was who he was, both as a man and as a vampire, but the seductress at his feet was one he trusted, and a woman he always gave more leeway to than anybody else in his life. It was that strange and unique connection between them that allowed him to relax and enjoy, to put his glamour aside as it wasn’t needed here. This wasn’t about power, but the flesh. As her
