ever return to what they had before Reed found out about his new life? The anger she felt from the night before was long passed. Reed professed to her how sorry he was for pointing his own anger and shock at her, but how would he feel when he awoke today and realized that indeed, this was his new existence.

If his feelings for her changed, she would adhere to her promise. She would allow him to stay on in her home, and help him in any way possible to get on his feet. He would then be free to go on to a life without her. If he did leave, she would remain rigid they never see each other again. She blinked back tears at the thought. Seeing Reed again would be too painful for her.

She needed a diversion, so she sought refuge in her pink bathroom. Sitting in the plush pink chair, she pulled up the matching footstool close and chose a bottle of pearly white nail polish from a shelf. After shaking the bottle, she opened and forced herself to concentrate at the task at hand. Just as she carefully stroked the thick liquid onto her big toe, she looked up to find Reed in the doorway.

“Hi,” she said in a flat tone, not knowing whether to be joyous at seeing him, or cautious after their night.

He walked to where she sat and took the polish bottle from her hand. Without speaking, he bent down and gently lifted her feet and sat on the footstool, her feet resting on his lap.

He began to paint her toenails. “You know, Sara, I was able to actually able to figure out a lot of things while I was sleeping. Don’t ask me how I could do that, but I did.”

Her lips curved into a smile. He was a fast learner, she thought.

“First a question, if that’s okay?”

“Of course.”

“Have you ever met any other people...spirits...whatever we are?”

“Yes, I have met people who are like we are in this dimension.”

“Were you overwhelmingly attracted to them?”

Her eyebrows rose. “Excuse me?”

“You mentioned last night that humans are attracted to us because they sense we’re something different. Is it the same with others who are like us?”

“No, not at all,” she answered.

“I knew almost from the second I met you that I couldn’t live without you. That is in my current form, not when I was dying in that car. That just proves what I feel for you is real, not just some illusion.

You told me the Fates have a purpose for me, that is why things worked out the way they did after I was killed. That I didn’t wind up with you without reason, that there are no mistakes made.”

“True,” she said simply.

“The time I have spent with you has been the happiest that I’ve known...”

When he paused, she wondered if this was his big goodbye. It pained her heart if he wanted to go, but she loved him enough to allow him to find his own way, and not try to stop him for her own needs and wants.

He stopped painting her nails and looked up at her, his eyes connecting to hers. “I have never been in love before, not like what I feel for you. Being with you is my destiny in this new existence. I think the Fates decided I belong to you, and you belong to me. It’s simple as that. Neither of us is meant to be alone any longer.”

“Are you sure this is the life you want?” she asked. She needed to be certain this wasn’t his fear keeping him with her. “What about your writing?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “What about it? If I’m meant to resume that aspect of my life, it will happen. It doesn’t change anything. I’m happy to help you operate Sara-Kate’s Spirit...I mean, if this is what you want. I know I hurt you last night, and I want to say that I am not perfect, that I make mistakes. But I never make the same mistake twice.”

There was such a sincerity in his countenance that she knew he was telling the truth, and that he was certain of what he wanted. In turn, the heaviness she endured for so many decades lifted. She dropped her feet to the tiled floor beneath her and lifted herself off of the chair and straddled his lap. She captured his face in her hands and drew him into her kiss.

“I love you, Reed Thayer, and I will love you now forever. From right now on, it’s you and me. The way it was meant to be,” she said against his lips. And she couldn’t be happier.
