I swallowed back a sob. “I will do whatever it takes. We need to save him, Kait.”
He nodded and turned away.
Epilogue
KAIT
The heartbroken look on her face was almost more than I could bear. On top of that, David was like a son to me. I agreed with her that we had to save him, but I was sure it had already been too long. It was killing me that I hadn’t noticed that it was an actual possession when it first started. Looking back, I had ignored some obvious signs. Pushing my despair and self-loathing deep inside myself so she couldn’t feel it, I turned back to them.
“Okay. Get some sleep tonight, and we will go after David in the morning.”
She nodded at me, tiredly. Her hair was falling out of the elaborate updo, and the sparkles had worn off. Her mascara and eye liner had run when she cried, and much of the rest of the makeup was smeared, but she still looked beautiful to me. She had handled herself like an experienced soldier tonight, which made me want her even more.
I laid a hand on Travis's shoulder as he went past to stop him. Evalia had one arm wrapped around her waist while the other hand spun her braid and seemed lost in her own thoughts.
“Stay with her tonight, Travis. I need to do some recon. Please don’t tell her.”
His eyes widen as he nodded, then hurried to catch up with her.
I watched them walk away. What I needed to do tonight scared me, but if I could get this being to help, we had a better chance of saving David. But what would I have to give to get its help?
