“My priorities were different back then,” she replied. “I wasn’t sure you’d stick around. Without you and your crazy investigations, all I had was my work. Now that you’re here in London, things have changed.”
I fiddled with a piece of packing tape. “I told you. It doesn’t matter what you do. I’m still going to Oxford.”
“I’ll give you that,” Evelyn conceded. “Go to Oxford. Recover. Do what you need to do. I’ll be waiting, Jack. Waiting for my best friend to make her way back to me.”
“You’ll be waiting a while.”
“It doesn’t matter how long it takes,” she replied. “I’ll be here.”
With Evelyn’s help, it took less than an hour to load my boxes onto the moving truck. She helped me step up into the cab then respectfully backed away as I started the engine. In the side mirror, I watched as she waved, but her smile fell when I didn’t wave back. As I rolled away from our shared flat, I honked the horn. Evelyn’s grin returned.
An hour later, I arrived in Oxford. Priya Pearson, an old family friend, greeted me with a hug and a kiss. After a quick lunch and some tea, we began unloading the truck and moving my things into the spare bedroom. I sighed, looking around at my new place. Another fresh start.
“Is it all right?” Priya asked as she set another box on the dresser. “I know it’s a bit small, but you have the rest of the house as well.”
“It’s great,” I said. “Thanks for having me—” My phone buzzed, and I checked the caller ID. “Hang on, Priya. It’s my dad.”
“Tell him I say hi,” she called over her shoulder as she made her way out. “I’ll make some lemonade.”
“Priya says hi,” I said into the phone first.
“That’s great, honey,” my father said tightly. “I’m glad you’re getting settled in, but don’t get too comfortable.”
My shoulders tensed. “Why? What’s wrong?”
“Can you come to D.C.?”
“When?”
“As soon as possible.”
My heart raced. “Dad, what’s going on?”
“Something’s happening here, honey. We need your help.”
