announces to the group.

“How are we going to get out of here in broad daylight, unnoticed?”

“Why don’t we split up. Brayden, you take a group with you and ride in the back of the truck.”

“Wizard, Axle, Clutch, Missouri, and Lizzie, you come with me. Router, I know it’s not a computer but you think you could handle driving?”

“Get the trucks ready!” the man with the messy man bun shouts. I look over and see the rear gate open on the truck. Green boxes labeled with black serial numbers across the top. I’ve seen stuff like this before. Cases like that are ones containing ammo and rifle shipments for the military.

“Keep your eyes on the perimeter,” another one shouts. Armed men patrol the area, eyes keen as Brayden and I crouch lower, blending into the background to stay out of sight.

Man bun is back and I watch as he holds his right arm up in the air. His index finger swirls around in a clockwise motion. At the signal the first truck moves out and two white vans take their places. They are commercial vans with names of bogus companies written on the sides. The windows are shaded, blocking our view of the inside. What I see next makes me hold my breath.A procession starts. Men with guns are herding women like cattle out into the vans.

“We should do something like call the cops,” I whisper.

“No need. They’re already here.” I follow his gaze to see what he sees. A group of uniformed men, who made the oath to serve and protect, are there loading women into the backs of vans.

“You thought I was the bad guy, and now you see, we’re just beating them at their own games.” Brayden’s voice is cold.

It happens all the time. Cops are being bought; they play their part, making more money on the wrong side of the law and then using that same law to hide their dirty deeds.

“We need to bring the whole thing down. We need to do this for Linda and all the other women who have suffered the loss of their freedoms at the hands of monsters.”

…to be continued.

Prologue

Shadow

It was after midnight, but no matter what I did, I couldn’t sleep. It was hot as hell, and I was sweating my damn balls off. The dump we lived in didn’t have air-conditioning, just open windows that let in the heat and ceiling fans that moved the dry, stale air around without actually cooling anything off. Miserable didn’t begin to describe the way I felt.

It was just me, my mom, and my little brother, and we couldn’t afford much on my mom’s salary alone. She worked part time at the only gas station in our small town, and waitressed at one of the dive bars on the weekends. I had a job as a mechanic after school, but mom refused to let me take on more than fifteen hours a week, saying my studies were more important. She wanted me to go to college so that I could get a good job someday. One that meant I wouldn’t have to live in an old, piece of shit house on the outskirts of town like we did now, with a roof that leaked and floors you were afraid you would fall through in places.

I’d just passed all of my finals this week and would graduate with honors on Sunday, which would make my mom proud, but it didn’t matter. I had no plans for college in my future. Old Mr. Hannigan down at Hannigan Auto, where I’d been turning wrenches for the past year, offered me a fulltime position last week, and I accepted it. I liked working with my hands, loved to make an engine purr. And, I needed to be around to help my mom with my younger brother, Brady. The kid was only eight years old, and I wanted him to have a better life than
