head inside. Walking in we’re greeted by Ridge.

“Well, how was your first shift and run, Ray?” he asks Ray as he hugs her.

“Invigorating, freeing, scary, painful. Ha ha I could go on and on. Mostly, I love how freeing it all felt,” she replies.

“I remember my first shift and run. It was and still is the best feeling. Each time more satisfying than the last,” he explains.

“I can't wait to do it again. Jude said we can go every night if I want, and I want to.”

“Ha, good. He could use the exercise.” He pats me on the back as he walks off.

I go about introducing her to everyone, Salvation, our club treasurer and then of course, Lux, the club president.

I introduce her, stating, “Lux, this is my mate, Sharayah, Ray for short.”

“Ray, I’ve heard a lot about you, it’s nice to finally meet you.” He embraces her in a hug.

“It’s nice to meet you too. All of you. I feel like I just joined a family of misfits, but somehow, I fit right in,” she says.

“You’re home, kitten, a part of our circus now.” I kiss her.

“I love you.”

“I love you too, kitten.”

She likes to wander through the wooded parts behind her home after it snows. Tucked away in the deepest part of the mountains, she thinks no one knows she exists, until a hunter sees her. Believing she has abilities unlike any human he has ever seen, he captures her and taunts her relentlessly so she will phase.

Lethal Opponent

Maximus “Max.”

I stare out the tiny kitchen window with my morning cup of coffee. Wrapped in my furriest robe and slipper booties, I watch the sun gleam off the snow-covered tops of the mountains behind my home and the wind blow through the branches of the trees. Winter has hit and it’s beautiful up here in my neck of Montana—secluded and quiet, the nearest neighbor miles away. Trails through the wooded areas make it easier to disappear and get lost if you don’t know where you’re headed, but I love it here, can’t imagine being anywhere else.

I inherited my home, a white brick house with a wraparound porch, from my parents after they died. It isn’t fancy, but it’s mine and it makes me happy. The beams that run the length of the ceilings are cedar, white walls with two bay windows big enough to let all the light shine in. Built-in bookshelves sit on either side of the stone fireplace and are stacked full of books because I am a nerd. Messy hair and glasses with my nose always buried in a book is who I am.

Being this far from bigger cities gives me a chance to see the wildlife that surrounds me. Last night before I went to sleep, I pulled my four-wheeler out of hiding so I go for a ride today. I set my coffee mug in the sink, make sure that small fire I had burning in the fireplace is out, and go to quickly change my clothes. I take a long-sleeve shirt and a pair of pants off their hangers, shed my robe, and go to get dressed. Once I’ve got the basics on, I grab the jumpsuit that I leave draped over the rocking chair in the corner of my bedroom and shimmy it on over my clothes. Wearing layers is the key to staying warm up here. I sit on the edge of my bed and tug on my snow boots, making sure to tie the laces into double knots so they don’t come loose during my ride. I do a quick check of myself and go to grab my keys and cell phone. As soon as I exit the front door, the crisp air hits me right in the face and I know it’s going to be a beautiful day for a ride.

Salvation

Spotted Hills, Texas is hill country and very green—rich in blue bonnets. It’s an old mining town where copper, silver, and other minerals were basically currency and so far from civilization, no one knows we even exist out here - not even the law. Here, we are the law. The Dark Leopards Motorcycle Club, where I’ve been for most of my life, is my place of solace or hell depending on what day you catch me. I’m the Treasurer of the club, collecting monthly dues for runs, charities, and anything else we have our hands in. I’m also responsible for settling disputes with my bare hands. If you don’t have your money by the time I come to collect, expect a date with my fists. That’s my favorite part about being a patched member of the DLMC. I like bashing people’s skulls in when they fail to pay. Sick, I know, and I wish it happened more often. The fact that it doesn’t, is rather disappointing.

I enter the clubhouse and find Luscious “Lux,” our club’s president, sitting on his regular barstool. I slap him hard on his
