I glanced across the table at Sully, who was watching me intently, then smirked once he noticed I was looking at him. Sully had never made much eye contact with me before. I mainly figured that was because his ego was so high and his head was too big to really give two shits about a human. He ran his fingers through his hair that hung to the middle of his neck, putting it all back in place. He reminded me a little of the younger Christian Slater when he had longer hair. Very sexy.
Ugh! Why was I even thinking that? Sully was a jerk, and Davin was the sexiest guy I had ever met. And he was mine. When I looked back at Sully, he was watching me again, so I turned the other way quickly avoiding meeting eyes.
Sarah was talking to Gretchen, then directed the conversation to us both when she saw my interest in what she was saying -- at least she took it for interest.
“I think we should get ready at your house, Gretch for the Fall Harvest thingy. If we stop by my house real fast after school, I can just grab my stuff, then head to yours if ya want. Don’t you think, Adelay?”
“I would, but I have to help my mom with a few things first. Then maybe I can head over.” I looked over at Sully. “That is if my chauffeur lets me.”
Sara crinkled her nose confused. “Huh?”
“Nothing.”
Sully smirked. Damn he looked good. Something seemed gentler about him today.
Robbie was still dropping subtle hints in eight period lab about Davin being gone, and needing someone to go to the dance with him, despite how many times I told him Davin was going to be there, he was just coming a little late.
Finally, the bell rang releasing school for the weekend, and me from Robbie’s constant pestering. “See ya later Robbie.”
“Uh yeah I’ll see you tonight, Adelay!” He shouted, as I rounded the corner of the classroom door.
Sully was waiting like he said at the front doors of the school to take me home.
“You got everything?”
“Yep.”
He started walking into the parking lot to his Mustang. When we got to the car, I realized something was missing.
“Where’s Gretchen?”
He unlocked my door first. So, I guess he could be somewhat of a gentleman if he really wanted to. “She went ahead with Sarah to get ready, or whatever the hell they’re doing. Are you sure you don’t want me to drop you off with them?”
“Positive. I want to go home and see if I have received anything from Xander.”
“I can guarantee you haven’t.”
“Oh really, and what makes you so sure? I could have gotten an email or something, and if not, I’m calling his mom.”
“Davin thinks it’s best you don’t do that, and just wait for him to return; then you guys can go to wherever it is you are supposed to be meeting your friend.”
“See that’s the problem…he never actually told me where. All he said was that he was going to be here on Halloween. I expected to hear from him again after his first letter to get more information, but that never happened. So, all I can do is guess. I was originally thinking the airport, but by the way his mom was talking, I think he took a road trip. Being that Colorado is so far away from here, that could possibly explain why I haven’t heard from him. Maybe he’s planning on surprising me.”
Sully stifled a laugh. “Oh, I’m sure he’s betting on surprising you, in more ways than you know.”
What positive balls of energy the Ashford boys were. I sat back into the cold leather seat, irritated. “If I knew what a jerk you were going to be, I would have opted to go with Gretchen - or even Robbie for that matter.”
He hit the brakes, pulling off to the side of the road, making me wish I’d just held in my two cents. He turned sideways, so that he was looking directly into my wide eyes. His eyes were the darkest shade of blue, like dark murky water with black swirls bursting throughout them. I had never really seen his eyes this extensively but with as close as he was to me, I could see every line and color that ran through them. I really hoped I didn’t just piss off a vampire.
“Do you have the slightest clue as to why I’m a "jerk" as you call it?”
“Because you love yourself so much it’s impossible not to be one?”
“Do you know what it’s like to wander this earth for centuries upon centuries, to relive your life over and over again, watching the people that matter most to you die around you while you keep on living in this hell hole people call earth? To have your brother take everything that you want away, every fucking time, yet it’s your duty to stand by his side through thick and thin?”
Rage flashed in his eyes, but underneath the anger I could hear, and feel, the sorrow that surfaced somewhere deep within his voice. He was jealous of Davin and had kept it in, deciding I was the best candidate to unleash on.
“N…no,” I squeaked. I didn’t know how I was supposed to respond to him.
“I changed first; yet he has more power than I do. My parents go to him for every little deed that needs to be done, and I’m just there to tag along if he needs me. Don’t get me wrong, I have more power than
