Jake’s shaking was worse.
“That is Parker,” he said again.
“Maybe there’s two of them,” I said. “Twins and triplets seem to be a prominent theme this week.”
“No. That’s him. He’s in the same clothes, has the same everything as when I saw him in the book shop. That’s not a twin. It’s him.”
He sounded so sure, but I still held onto the twin theory. For now.
“It’s him,” Jake repeated. “That’s him.”
“Baby,” I whispered soothingly.
“I’m gonna fucking gut him,” Jake seethed. “I swear, I’m gonna open him up. He’s trying to fuck with my head. What’s his game? What’s his fucking game?”
I had to stop this storm from landing. “Jake. Calm down. We’ll—"
Louise’s laughter cut through the house again. “Daddy? Papa? You’re missing the funnies!”
Jake blinked, the crimson receding in an instant. He let out a massive sigh. “You know what? Let’s just go and be a family before the door knocks again, or the phone goes off. Yeah?”
Just like that, he was calm. Sort of.
“Agreed,” I said, placing my hand on his back.
We had the opportunity for some quiet time. It was always best to grab it when it was offered in this crazy life of ours.
