Indeed, the maiden murmured.
Stop listening in.
You summoned me. I have given you valuable guidance. Be grateful.
I am, Holly thought. I just wish I had more direction.
Trust your warriors. They will do right by you in my name. Though, it isn’t just for the sake of my name that they obey. Calling yourself the maiden isn’t enough to inspire true love and loyalty. You must be the maiden.
How do I do that? A sense of hopelessness washed over Holly. She couldn’t be anything while sitting here in the dirt, trapped in a cell.
You will learn. A trial by fire, if you will.
As long as you don’t mean actual fire...
I do.
Holly seized up in a panic. The maiden laughed.
That was what you humans call a joke, I believe.
The voice in my head makes jokes. Wonderful. You’ve got to work on your comedic timing.
“Holly, you’re starting to freak me out,” Loch called.
“I’m just sitting here,” Holly replied.
“You look like you’re having an imaginary conversation. Have you finally cracked? Pearl was always a bit batty, but that was part of her charm.”
How do I get rid of him? Holly asked.
You don’t. He’s one of yours. You saw the paintings.
Fuck.
“Holly, someone’s coming,” Loch whisper-shouted.
Holly pulled herself out of her mind and tried to focus on the corporal world around her.
“Who?”
“I can’t tell. Just...don’t look weird when they walk by. You don’t want to be singled out.”
“The fact that I’m in this cell proves I’ve been singled out,” Holly snapped.
“Quiet. Keep your eyes down.” Something in his tone told Holly he was not to be questioned on this point.
She trained her eyes on the ground and kept her mind quiet. She hoped the maiden—or whatever her name really was—was watching.
“We found her by luck.” Fang’s voice bounced off the rocky walls. He sounded proud, eager even.
“Luck will not win this war. Planning and skill will.” The voice that answered sounded cold, smooth, and surprisingly young. “Is this her?”
“Yes, sir,” Fang said.
Holly bit the inside of her cheek in order to keep her outward composure. That man must be the one behind all of this. He was the one who wanted to return to the dark ways. He was the reason the maiden chose her in the first place.
His boots appeared in her vision. She should’ve picked a seat farther away from the cell door.
“Look at me,” he snapped.
Holly slowly lifted her eyes. Her gaze met his. She gasped softly. She knew this man.
“What a beauty she is,” he purred. “Do you know who I am, maiden?”
“You’re...” she hesitated. “I know your face.” It was painted on the wall in her grandmother’s study. She couldn’t tell what color his eyes were from the portrait. Now she could see one was cold and hard as dark steel, the other was paler, like snow.
“I should hope so,” he said. “But do you know my name?”
“Trevor. Your name is Trevor.”
“That’s right. Trevor Charmain.” His smile was feral. “Together, you and I are going to create a new future for the bear clans. Welcome, my maiden.”
