“What about that shifter?” Celeste asked. “Will you reward him, too?”
“The firstborn?” Phaedra rolled her eyes. “No. Unlike last time, I have no interest in being a breeder to a bunch of idiotic mountain men. Do you have any idea what it’s like to live with them? I’m almost glad I died. It gave me a way out.”
“The legends always spoke of the Maiden being kind and loving to the bear shifters. Was that not the case?”
Phaedra’s expression softened.
“It was, once.”
She closed her mind off before the memories could fully form.
“Eventually, they did as all men do. They became obsessed with the new power in their lives and let it drive them mad.”
“How do you mean?”
“What does it matter?” Phaedra shrieked. “I have risen. I will take back my power and crush all of those who oppose me to dust. Help me and your never-ending life will be spent in comfort. What more is there to think of?”
“Everyone else!”
“Everyone else will have a chance to embrace me. I am not here to soak the land in blood and leave it barren. That wouldn’t make for a very nice kingdom, would it?”
“No.” Celeste clenched her teeth again.
“Stop that.” Phaedra tapped her vampire companion on the jaw. “I told you. You’ll break a fang.”
“Wouldn’t you like that?” Celeste seethed. “It’s one less weapon I can use against you.”
“Oh, I’m not worried about that.” Phaedra chuckled. “Besides, I would never deprive a woman of the things that make her powerful. That’s the point of all this, don’t you see?”
“You’re mad.”
“One has to be a little mad in order to be a visionary. Come. We shouldn’t stay down here too long. Our flesh will make the souls uneasy.”
Phaedra ascended the stairs without waiting for Celeste to follow.
She was so close now. Within a matter of days, this strange new world would be hers.
