“Logan, it’s so nice to finally meet you. Harriet’s told us so much about you. I’m Cady, and this is my husband, Miles.”
Logan shook her hand, then turned to the cowboy. “Miles, nice to meet you, too.” Miles expression didn’t soften, but he did shake his hand. “This is a fantastic piece of property.”
“Yes, it is.”
“Harriet says you have fifty horses, I hope the weather holds out, and I get to ride one.”
“You ride?” Miles’s eyebrow rose. “Thought you were a city boy.”
“My grandfather lives out in New Jersey, and has a small farm. Nothing as grand as this place. When I was a kid, he had ponies. Spent every summer at his place, riding, fishing, and romping around his fields.”
It was as if Logan had said the magic words because Miles’s expression changed. A grin appeared on his face, and he grabbed one of the bags from Logan. “Come on inside, let me introduce you to the rest of the Carmichael family.”
Harriet fell into step beside Logan. “You seem to have won over Miles.”
Logan squeezed her hand. “Just two more brothers to go, huh?”
“Nah, Caleb and Nolan are pussycats. It’s Jules you’ll have to impress.”
As the Carmichaels disappeared into the house, Logan stopped and pulled Harriet back. He glanced over at the huge decorated tree in the center of the driveway. The lights twinkled in the dusk that was closing in around them. “Before we go in, I have something I want to do.”
He took her hand and led her over to the tree, and from his pocket, he pulled out a gift, wrapped in gold paper. Falling to his knee, he cleared his throat and held out the small box, “Harriet Carmichael, will you do me the honor of marrying me?”
Tears glistened in the corner of Harriet’s eyes. Her hands flew over her mouth, and she gasped. Then nodding, she took the package from him and pulled the wrapper off. She flipped open the lid of the ring box, and her jaw fell open at the sight of the solitaire ring.
“Oh, Logan, it’s so beautiful. Of course, I will marry you.”
Feeling relieved, he got to his feet, and took the ring out of the box, placing it on the ring finger of her left hand.
It looked perfect sitting there. “I thought we’d do it later in the new year, and if Miles is okay with it, I think it would be perfect if we got married here. Perhaps we could persuade your family to make a trip back home this summer.”
Harriet threw her arms around him. “Oh, Logan that would be amazing. Huh, except, you are going to have to find a ton of groomsmen.”
“I do? Why?”
“Because Tashia, Katie, RoryLynn, Lori, and Sarah will all have to be my bridesmaids!”
He rolled his eyes. “Hmm, well in that case, we better start planning.”
Miles appeared at the door. “Get inside, you’ll catch your deaths.”
Logan clutched Harriet’s hand as they made their way into the house. Inside, all the Carmichaels were gathered in the family room. As soon as Harriet walked inside, Jules squealed and ran to her. She snatched Harriet’s hand out of Logan’s, then held it in the air.
“Oh, my God, Harry, you got engaged?”
Logan never got to make a big announcement, which he was grateful for, and he found he didn’t have to persuade Jules of his merit, either. Jules was too wrapped up in congratulating them, and spent the whole evening setting up a Pinterest board stuffed full of wedding ideas.
When they finally made their way to the cabin Miles had set aside for them, Logan felt like he’d known Harriet’s family for as long as he had known her.
“Have you decided on a date?” he asked, as he climbed into bed next to her.
“September. It’s beautiful here in the fall.”
Logan pulled her into his arms. “I doubt it is as beautiful as you. But I think September would be perfect.”
“You sure? It’s a lot to organize.”
“Well, it looks like Jules has already begun planning.”
“Yes, I think she is as excited as me.”
“Well, we have plenty of time to work out the details, so how about we celebrate?” He pulled her flush against him, his hand running over her curves.
“Hmm, do you have anything specific in mind?”
“You better believe it, baby. Where you’re concerned, I only ever have one thing on my mind.”
