CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
As soon as she walked through the door one of the assistants ran up to her.
“You are needed immediately. There has been another murder. It’s down near Denton, Texas. Here is the address. Lieutenant Meyers said to call him after you get on the road and he will fill you in.”
Harley went to her office and grabbed her bag. There was an assortment of charms, potions, and weapons in a large black canvas bag.
She texted Mrs. Reyes and Aiden letting them know she had to go out on a case. Aiden asked if she would be back anytime soon. She wouldn’t be.
Once she was headed down the highway she hit the blue tooth on the SUV and called the lieutenant. Hands-free was the only way to go while driving.
This time three people were killed; the youngest was thirteen, the other two were in their early to mid-thirties. An entire family had been wiped out.
Meyers gave her specific directions for once she got off the highway. The murders had taken place on a rural farm.
There were multiple police cars, ambulances, the coroner’s vehicle and supernatural response vehicles all crowded around what looked like an old farmhouse.
Yellow tape was everywhere. She was approached as soon as she got out of the vehicle.
“You can’t be here. This is a police investigation.”
Harley showed him her badge and other credentials which she wore around her neck like a backstage pass.
“Nice, but I still can’t let you go in.”
“Why the hell not? I’m with the supernatural response team. I’m here on Lieutenant Meyer’s request.”
“Doesn’t matter why you are here little girl. You are not going in.”
“I don’t know who you are, but get the fuck out of my face. I’m the witch on call. This is my business as much as it is yours. Now move aside.”
He grabbed her roughly. “I said, you don’t belong here. Now get back in your vehicle and leave.”
“Look buddy. I don’t know who the hell you are. I really don’t care who you are. You need to move out of my way.”
She had every right to be here. If she was called in on a paranormal investigation she had the same power to view the scene as a police officer.
“Let go of me, officer.” She looked at his badge it said his name was Officer R. Smith.
He dug his fingers in deeper biting into her upper arms. She’d had enough. Harley ran the heel of her boot down his shin and stomped on his foot as hard as she could. He let out a cry of pain alerting others in the area.
Smith swung on Harley and she dodged out of the way. She ducked two more times before landing a solid blow on him. She might be arrested later, but she was not going to stand there and get beaten up.
When he went for his gun, Harley used a kick to knock it out of his hand before she landed a blow knocking him back. By that time, they were surrounded by other officers including Lieutenant Meyers.
“What the hell is going on here, Lake?”
“I haven’t got a clue. Officer Smith approached me as soon as I got out of my vehicle. He denied me access and then grabbed a hold of my arms.
When I tried to go around him he threw a punch at me. After I hit him back he pulled his gun.”
“So, you assaulted an officer?”
“I protected myself from being assaulted by an officer.”
Three men were currently restraining Officer Smith who was not only cursing like a sailor but swearing he was going to kill the little whore that touched him.
Several officers, who said they knew Smith, were puzzled by his anger and that he had tried to detain her. After thirty or so minutes of the teams arguing back and forth, it was decided that Smith would be taken in for magical evaluation.
After he was gone, Meyers escorted Harley to the murder scene. Each of the family members had been killed in a different room.
Blood splatters on the wall. The father had been torn into large pieces. The mother had her heart taken out and the girl had her throat slashed. She had nearly been decapitated.
Each body had bite marks on it. They were like the ones found on the college kids. She followed the paranormal medical examiner around while he measured the bite marks on all the different bodies.
“Five different marks in all. Is that conclusive to the other murders?”
“Yes. There were five of them. Let me know as soon as the reports are back. Looks like we might have a paranormal killing spree on our hands.”
Harley took a potion out of her kit and began to pour its contents around the rooms. She was careful not to contaminate any evidence, yet she got as close as she could to the victims.
Walking around them using an incantation the potion started to turn a deep blood red in color. The color confirmed that it had been vampires in the attack.
The bite marks would have been enough evidence. Harley wanted to make sure. She wished she would have used the same potion out at the gargoyle scene.
She would have been able to tell if it was the same group of vampires. Though she was certain it was. Paranormal proof would save the police from investigating other groups.
As it was she hoped they would find clues that would lead them to the group of killers.
“Harley, didn’t you say that the last killings were done on vampire property?”
“Yes. The kids had crossed onto private property owned by a vampire.”
“Have we questioned the vampire yet?”
“No, not yet.”
“No time like the present. Let’s go. You can drive.”
They made small talk
