Then, with a low growl, he bit her—sinking his long, sharp fangs deep in her throat and injecting his essence directly into her bloodstream.

“And I never want to be without you, my Potentate,” Ty responded. “And to think, I only came here to guard you. I never knew my assignment would end like this.”
“I didn’t either but I’m so glad it did,” Ellina sent.
“So am I, sweetheart.” He withdrew his fangs and gazed down into her face, a look of infinite tenderness in his eyes. “I’ll love and cherish you all my days, Ellina. I’m so glad I was given the mission of Guarding the Goddess.”
Epilogue
“So everything is all settled on Helios Beta now?” Lisa asked, once she and Asher were snuggled under the covers and had finished making love for the first time. She knew there would be a second time—and quite possibly a third and a fourth tonight. But for now they were taking a break to talk over his rescue mission when he’d gone back to the planet where they had first fallen in love to help his friend.
“Oh yes.” He settled her more comfortably in the crook of his arm and dropped a kiss on her forehead. “Ty’rial has already given his notice to Commander Sylvan. He and the Potentate—Ellina—are bonded and he’s going to stay on as her consort.”
“I think that’s wonderful.” Lisa sighed dreamily. “But what happened to that awful High Priest who tried to hurt her?” she asked, frowning. “I never trusted him, you know. I thought when we were leaving Helios Beta the first time that he wanted to be in charge and didn’t like the fact that Ellina wouldn’t let him run things.”
“Well, in that you were right,” Asher said soberly. “Apparently the Priests of Thufar had been running things for a very long time from behind the scenes—manipulating the various Potentates by choosing consorts who wouldn’t get in the way and doing other underhanded things as well.”
“Well that Kikbax was a jerk!” Lisa said decisively. “I just hope they hung him up by his thumbs and let everyone know what a traitor he was!”
“There was a public trial, or so Ty told me,” Asher said. “Kikbax was stripped of his title and sentenced to life in the dungeons.” He frowned. “I’m pretty sure Ty wanted him put to death, but Ellina is a merciful ruler and also, she thought that it would be a greater punishment for him to live down in the dark, dank prison under the palace that to die instantly.”
Lisa shivered. “Ugh! Well, I certainly wouldn’t want to spend my life down there! Who did they choose to replace him?”
“That’s the good part—The Potentate decreed that the High Priesthood will be a shared position from now on. And the first people she appointed to fill it are Natillus and Lambada.”
