“That sounds…”
“Yeah, we’ll leave it at that,” I said with a guilty chuckle. “But for real, though, are you worried about the inheritance deal?”
“Honestly? Yes.”
I empathized with Brett. I had the sports contracts to ensure that even if I had come from rags, I would have all the riches I ever needed in my lifetime. And while Brett wasn’t exactly making minimum wage at the winery, he also wasn’t living the baller life that the Ferrari fortune would someday promise—if, and only if, he had a wife and family.
I had always joked with him about one idea in particular that seemed ridiculous at the time, but now that it was here…
“Why don’t you just pay someone off to marry you?”
“Damn, I know I have an ego, but I don’t think I’m that ugly!” Brett said.
“I’m serious.”
Brett stopped laughing.
“We used to joke about it in our early twenties, but why not? Hire an assistant for the company. Make a deal with her on the side. ‘Fall in love’ as it were. Get married. Grandparents, much as we want them around, will pass away at some point. You get the money. You divorce, of course, amicably. You have a prearranged deal of some kind. It’s a win-win. You may not get all the money that you would if you genuinely fell in love, but at least this way, you’re guaranteed some of the prize money.”
Brett stared at me for a few seconds.
“Hahahahahaha!”
His laughter was loud enough that Izzy and my mother, hanging out together by the bow, looked up at us. But when Brett saw I wasn’t laughing, he slowly died down.
“You’re serious,” he said.
“Just think on it,” I said. “Who knows, maybe you’ll find the love of your life by complete accident that way.”
Brett could only shake his head.
“You really do love her, huh?”
I glanced down at her with Ryan on her lap. She bore no more swelling, no more bruises. She only bore beauty, grace, and fire.
“I love her with everything I have.”
