OneThousand and One Dark Nights
Once upon a time, in the future…
I was a student fascinated with stories and learning.
I studied philosophy, poetry, history, the occult, and
the art and science of love and magic. I had a vast
library at my father’s home and collected thousands
of volumes of fantastic tales.
I learned all about ancient races and bygone
times. About myths and legends and dreams of all
people through the millennium. And the more I read
the stronger my imagination grew until I discovered
that I was able to travel into the stories... toactually
become part of them.
I wish I could say that I listened to my teacher
and respected my gift, as I ought to have. If I had,I
would not be telling you this tale now.
But I was foolhardy and confused, showing off
with bravery.
One afternoon, curious about the myth of the
Arabian Nights, I traveled back to ancient Persia to
see for myself if it was true that every day Shahryar
(Persian: شهريار,“king”) married a new virgin, and then
sent yesterday's wife to be beheaded. It was written
and I had read, that by the time he met Scheherazade,
the vizier's daughter, he’d killed one thousand
women.
Something went wrong with my efforts. I arrived
in the midst of the story and somehow exchanged
places with Scheherazade – a phenomena that had
never occurred before and that still to this day, I
cannot explain.
Now I am trapped in that ancient past. I have
taken on Scheherazade’s life and the only way I can
protect myself and stay alive is to do what she didto
protect herself and stay alive.
Every night the King calls for me and listens as Ispin tales.
And when the evening ends and dawn breaks, I stop ata
point that leaves him breathless and yearning formore.
And so the King spares my life for one more day, sothat
he might hear the rest of my dark tale.
As soon as I finish a story... I begin a new
one... like the one that you, dear reader, havebefore
you now.
Prologue
Cheyenne Donegal could hear a slow but steady dripping soundas she sluggishly cracked open her eyes.
Her arms ached with a pain that nearly made her cry out, butsomething warned her to keep silent. A dull throb in her head pounded, andawareness and memory came to her at the same time.
She had been walking down Swain’s Lane, the steep andunforgiving path that separated East Highgate Cemetery from West HighgateCemetery.
She’d thought she had the answer to the killings…
And she had. But, sadly—oh so sadly—that seemed to be onlypart of it.
Her wrists were tied, and the middle of the rope bindingthem had been tossed over a hook suspended from the ceiling. The tension was thecause of the ache in her arms.
Her head pounded because of the smash from the vampire’scane that had cost her her consciousness.
And the drip?
Carefully opening her eyes wider, she looked around. Itseemed to be an underground cavern or…no.
Not cavern.
Tomb.
The structure seemed to have been carved deep into the earthlike other tombs, but it was slightly different. There were shelves, as in manymausoleums in Highgate. But not all of them held coffins.
Just…
Bodies. Corpses in various stages of decay. Stretched out onstone.
Cheyenne fought back a scream. She’d meant to keep herawareness of her situation a secret as long as possible until she discovered away out, an escape, a means to find help.
But she was deep in the earth, she knew. And she doubted shewas in either the east or the west section of the cemetery proper, but ratheroff to the side somewhere. In a tomb secretly dug years ago by someone known asthe vampire, and now used to perhaps preserve the victims he held nearand dear to his heart, instead of leaving them out on the streets to be found.
Cheyenne was able to swing slightly. And a scream nearlyescaped her despite her best efforts.
She had found the source of the dripping sound.
And she knew she wasn’t just being held.
She was in line.
A woman was suspended by her ankles next to her. She hadbeen hung upside down, her throat punctured.
And her life’s blood
