“A girl can’t start eighth grade without a new wardrobe, Little O,” she told me.
Eighth grade! I still couldn’t believe it. Only one more year until high school!
There was so much change ahead.
The biggest change of all was the wedding that our family had to look forward to. Aunt True asked me to be her chief bridesmaid, “because tall timber sticks together.” Lauren was going to be a bridesmaid too, and Pippa couldn’t wait to be the flower girl. My mother would be the matron of honor, and Miss Marple was going to be the ring bearer. Gramps and Lola would be coming home for the wedding too.
The date had been set for October, when all of New Hampshire’s hills would be covered in a blaze of glory, as my aunt described it. Autumn was her favorite time of year.
And just like the seasons kept changing in Pumpkin Falls, things would keep changing for me, too. I understood that now. Because life was about change, just like Aunt True had said. There were surprises around every corner.
And that was really truly fine with me.
