This is what it’s like to be a part of a family, and it feels amazing.
“Not a baby,” I tell her, my eyes locked on hers. “Two babies. Twins. And I just finished my first trimester, so we just have six months to go.”
I swear, I have never seen her look this happy before. She drops my hand and turns to Pops, grabbing his arm. “Twins! Did you hear her?”
“I did.” He sounds as calm and serious as ever, but when I look hard at him, I can easily see the joy on his face. It looks like he’s just as excited about being a grandparent as Ma is, but he hides it better.
“Twins.” Roque’s beaming and comes up behind me to grab my shoulders. Even though I’m in a chair, I instinctively lean back into him. I love having him around me, touching me, supporting me. He’s the real deal.
“And that brings us to the other part of our news,” he says, squeezing my shoulders a little. “We’ve bumped the wedding up a bit. It’s this weekend.”
“This weekend!” His mother looks shocked and tears her eyes from her son to look at me. “There’s no way that we’ll be able to get everything planned by then. We need music, a cake, a caterer.” She starts ticking things off on her fingers, which makes me laugh.
“No, Ma, we don’t.” I grin at the woman who took me under her wing. Even when everything around me felt like it was falling apart, she was there for me. She’s the one who brings me lunch each day when Roque has to work and can’t join me. She’s the one who has taken me into the kitchen and taught me all of the things that a mother should teach her daughter.
“We want to get married in the backyard,” I tell her. “I have a white sundress to wear, and all I want is dessert.”
She grins at me, and I know that she can read my mind. She knows exactly what I want. “Tiramisu,” she says, nodding firmly.
Hell, yeah, I want tiramisu. I want tiramisu and to be surrounded by my new family. I splay my hand on my stomach and look up at Roque. My fiancé. My future husband.
This. This is what I want. And I got it.
And nothing is going to take it from me.
