call her. “It’s about time!” Sam exclaims.

“Hi, Sam. I’m home alone right now.”

“How’s things? No drama? My bro is doing okay?”

“Everything is fine. Rick is great. I’m happy it’s near the end of the season.”

“It’s a lot of baseball, isn’t it?”

“I love the baseball. Honestly, I’ll probably miss it when the season is over. But, we’re definitely looking forward to some time together that’s not regulated by his schedule.”

“What was with the women sitting with you last night? I’ve never seen that before.”

“Those are my friends from the section my season ticket is in. The visiting team noticed me in the stands during BP and yelled at me, and I mean asking me for a personal tour of the area and offering me a night I wouldn’t forget. Anyway, it was my idea to have six of me and that would avoid anyone getting suspended or having their jaw dislocated.”

Sam laughs, “Seriously? I guess it worked.”

“Yea, and the girls and I got toasted. It was fun, but your bro was slightly irritated with me when he found me sleeping on the front seat of his car after the game. I may have been more inebriated than I thought.” I laugh remembering the time with the girls, all of us cheering together, and yelling at the jerks on the other team.

“I’m sure he got over it quick.”

I wonder if it’s what triggered him not to sleep. “He was amazing this morning and happy when he left to work out.”

“Don’t tell me my bro was amazing. I don’t need to hear that.”

I try again as I giggle, “Rick was fine when he left this morning, better?”

“Much.”

“He’s been out of the house early the last couple of days. Chase has been picking him up to work out.”

“He’s looking good behind he plate, especially considering how deep into the season it is.” The proud sister tone in her voice shining through.

“Yeah, but I think he’s in his head about me.” I’m not sure I should be sharing, but Sam has been there for me since the second I met her.

“Why do you think that?”

“He couldn’t sleep last night. He told me I’ve been in his head. We had decided no relationship stuff until after the season, but he brought it up anyway.”

“And, no positive tests?”

“No, I’m still taking my pill.”

“You still believe the pill can guard you from the super sperm of a professional baseball player?” Sam jokes with me, I think.

“I don’t know. So far it has. I told him I’d quit taking it whenever he wants me to.” F’ing DOTM!

“You what?” Sam’s voice hits a higher pitch than I’ve ever heard.

“What?” Play dumb Sherry, maybe it will go away.

“Did you say you offered to quit taking the pill?”

“Yes.”

“But, you’re still taking it, right?”

“Yes. He basically said not yet and it made him happy that I offered.”

“I know my bro. I’m sure it made his chest puff out and he strutted around. You can’t play games with him like that. You know how much he wants it.”

“I only play board games with him, and some flirty teasing sometimes.”

“You know what I meant.”

“Yes, I do. Don’t tell him, but I was sad that he didn’t want me to quit taking it.”

“Sherry, it’s only been a few months.”

“I know and the things I want—Fuck! I’ve never wanted them before and it makes me crazy, Sam. I’m doing my best to keep my head straight and to support him.”

“I knew you two were combustible together, but you really do love him. I’ve been worried.”

“We belong together.” I hear my voice and my heart beats faster. “I’ll do better at staying in touch. I’ve got to get to the stadium.”

“It’s kind of early, don’t you think?”

“Rick likes me there for BP. I’ve been scouting intel for him pre-game.” I laugh at the thought of it.

“Okay, I’ll be watching as always.”

“I’m leading karaoke on the field tonight. Don’t know if you’ll be able to see that. Talk soon!” And I hang up as I grab my things and run out the door for the stadium.

Chapter Twenty-Six

I pull into the player’s garage to park and Carter catches me walking into the stadium. “Do you have your jersey for being on field later?”

“Yes, sir! I’m ready!”

“I could get use to your new look, gorgeous.” I made an effort, but I have no idea what he’s talking about. Big deal! I curled my hair. “Contact me if you have any issues with the visitors. All of these guys need to be professional.”

Text from Carter - Text me if you need to be discreet.

Text to Carter - Thank you, sir.

“I’ll tell Seno I saw you walking into the stadium. I don’t know what you do to that man, but I know I’ve never seen him as happy as he is when he sees you.” Carter walks away into the depths of the stadium leaving me with a warm heart and a bright smile that I couldn’t hide if I wanted to. Who would want to hide a Rick Seno smile anyway?

I sit behind the Seals dugout and slather on my sunscreen.

Text to Rick - Behind the dugout. Ready to watch you swing your bat. ;)

No response. I check the lineup to make sure my Rick is starting and he is. The lineup is normal.

The field gets set up for batting practice and the team starts to show up on the field. Most of the guys stretching and loosening up. Some running sprints and throwing a ball around in the outfield. No Seno. I look around to see who’s out and there’s no Chase. Okay, that’s interesting. The rest of the team goes on about their business, nothing out of the ordinary. Kris and Mason wave at me. I observe and keep an eye out for Rick and Chase. They finally join the team about halfway through batting practice and they’re all smiles, joking together. Rick runs up to see me between his turns at bat, kissing me like I’m his life
