Not seeing anyone I recognise; we head outside to find a small campfire has been erected in the front yard. Meg and Huxley are talking easily on a picnic blanket with their backs to us, an empty blanket to their right and Garrett and Axel cuddling opposite. On the far side, two guys are hunched over their knees with their backs to one another. I eye the pair curiously, wondering why they have matching busted lips or would wear full black to a party, not to mention one with a beanie hat pulled down to his ears.
“Who are they?” I whisper to Dax as we move towards the spare blanket. Garrett jolts upright upon seeing us, checking his invisible watch with a sigh as Dax drags me down into his lap.
“Meet Rhys and Clayton,” Garrett answers for me. “They’ve just become members of the basketball team starting next semester. I found them fighting in the locker rooms and thought I’d invite them over for a little story time.”
“And like I said, fuck you and your stories. You don’t know anything about me,” Beanie hat rages, clenching his fists and lifting his shoulders back as if he thinks he could take on Garrett, who is chuckling at his outburst.
“Trust me, I know your type. I’ve been you. And you’re going to need to hear what I have to say if you plan on surviving long enough to pay off mommy’s debts.” Beanie’s mouth falls open, his eyebrows creasing, but Garrett doesn’t seem surprised. “Yeah, I know a guy who works in admissions and read your files. So, I know you’re both the perfect fit.”
“The perfect fit for what?” I ask across the dancing flames of the fire.
“To continue The Shadowed Souls, of course.”
Thanks!
