“I can’t disagree with you there. She’s beautiful.” He scratched the side of his head.
“I know right? You need to make a move and nail this thing down for us.”
Remington laughed out loud. “You think so?”
“Yeah. I do. It was my dad that taught me that if you see an opportunity not to let it slip through your fingers.” Charlie reached out and placed her hand on top of his. “I’ll be here in the morning. I can’t exactly run away.” She attempted a joke.
Remington’s throat was thick. “You’re amazing. You’re teaching me what real strength and courage look like.”
Charlie blushed.
Remington felt as if he and Charlie had passed some kind of milestone. He didn’t know if this was a good time but was compelled to ask the question that had been nagging in the back of his mind. Remington’s voice was quiet. “Charlie, what happened the night of the accident?”
The question clearly caught her off guard. She swallowed. “I-I don’t remember.”
Remington knew that she was holding something back. “You know you can trust me right?”
She bit her lip. “When it comes back to me, I promise you’ll be the first person I tell.” Charlie exaggerated a yawn which he noticed she tended to do when she didn’t want to talk about her accident. “I’m so tired. You should go before it gets too late. See you in the morning?”
The twelve-year-old minx was dismissing him. After a slight pause of indecision, he bent low and kissed Charlie on the forehead. “Bright and early. I’ll have my cell phone with me if you need me for any reason. Okay?”
“I’m going to be asleep. Now, go. Stop stalling.” She pulled the covers up to her chin.
Remington grabbed his overnight bag and threw it over his shoulder as he backed out of the room. “Are you really sure about me leaving?”
“Please leave.” She rolled her eyes. “Bye, dad.”
“Okay. Okay.” He put his hands up in surrender. He stopped at the door before leaving. “Your phone is by your bed. Make sure it’s charged.”
“Yep.” She smiled sweetly. “I love you.”
Remington’s heart had never been so full. “I love you too.”
Chapter 20
Sky needed to calm her hot ass down. Even after a shower, her body was still humming from her time on the roof with Remington.
She attempted to distract herself as she sat curled up on the sofa in front of the television drinking a glass of wine and flipping channels. Sky had a moment where she wished she had someone important in her life. Someone who could hold her and listen as she moaned and groaned about the trials of her day. It wasn’t really someone. It was Remington. His face is what flashed through her mind. His life was more complicated than hers, and it was so full. He said he wanted to figure things out, but there really wasn’t any room for her.
Bzzt. Bzzt. Bzzt. Sky reached over onto the table and grabbed it. A smile crossed her face as she instantly recognized the number on the display. She must have thought him up. “Hey.”
He could hear the smile in her voice. “Hey.” It was probably the same one she heard in his. “I’ve got this bottle of wine that I think you might enjoy.”
“I can’t wait to try it. If tomorrow was anything like today, as soon as I walk through the door from work, I might just drink it straight from the bottle.”
“Was it our rooftop experience or an all-around rough day?”
Sky sighed. “Do I need to pick one? Although the roof-top was probably the highlight of my day.”
“Then, how about you let me inside, and we can pass the bottle between us—maybe even finish what we started.”
Sky sat up and threw her legs over the couch. “Wait. Where are you?”
“Outside your door.”
She was surprised. “How’d you—”
“You don’t know yet that I have my ways?” He chuckled. “Remember, I sent a squad car for you.”
Sky got up and quickly went into the kitchen where she dumped her glass of wine. “But, I didn’t know you knew my specific address.” She untied her silk scarf from her head and put it in a drawer as she ran her fingers through her wiry curls.
“Are you going to let me?”
Sky went to the door, took two deep breaths to calm her nerves, and slowly opened it.
She took his breath away. It was only a little after nine p.m., but Remington wasn’t expecting Sky to open the door in a slip-like negligée that barely came down past her ass.
She smiled saucily. “I thought you wanted to come inside?”
“You better believe I plan to do a lot of cummin’.” Remington pulled Sky’s body flush into the hard planes of his body and kissed her. She opened like a flower, and he slipped his tongue inside the hot cavern of her mouth. Their kiss was hot. A continuation of what they started on the roof-top.
Remington walked Sky backward into her condo and closed the door with his foot. Her hands snaked up into his hair. With his one free hand, Remington squeezed her ass into his hardness. Her moan made him want her more than he wanted his next breath. But, he kept hearing the words, don’t mess this up, in the back of his head. He
