Jade

My heart pounded rapidly while I checked my appearance one last time in my little compact mirror. Everything had to be just right, every hair in place, not a single smudge in my makeup. The little black mask was securely fastened, obscuring a chunk of my face and completing the outfit I'd spent two weeks deciding on. Combined with the sleek black dress and the high heels that still made me nervous to even look at, much less walk in, I was smoking. In my humble opinion, of course.

It was so outside my normal attire. On a normal day, I'd have never in a million years dreamed of dressing like this. But it was Halloween. Well, not technically Halloween, but it was the company's annual charity ball they held every year just before Halloween. And since the office masquerade ball frowned upon showing up dressed in a giant hotdog, I figured I'd do something a little outside my normal box. Everyone else would be dressing up in their finest, so I figured I might as well do the same thing.

And yet, my heart continued to pound as I made my way through the office toward the ballroom the company kept for nights like this. I had to fight from looking at the ground at every step, still afraid I was going to twist an ankle or break my neck in the stupid heels. I'd spent the last two weeks wearing them around my apartment, and so I was used to them, mostly, but I still couldn't completely banish the fear of falling flat on my face in front of all of my coworkers.

Not to mention my boss.

I suppressed a shudder as I pulled the door open and stepped inside. The party was already well underway, with a good chunk of the staff already in attendance, plus their spouses. Music filled the large ballroom, along with laughter and banter from everyone. My heart pounded even faster as I noticed people looking over my way. I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks, but I refused to acknowledge it.

You can do this, I told myself as I took a deep breath and made my way over toward the bar. A little alcohol would certainly help calm my nerves. At least, I hoped it would.

I'd barely gotten through my martini when James from accounting approached, asking me to dance. I resisted the urge to giggle like a schoolgirl as I took his hand and let him lead me through the throng of people toward the dance floor. Normally, my coworkers barely paid me any attention. Tonight though, all their eyes were on me.

That thought made me more than a little giddy.

At work, I wanted them to see me as an equal. I wasn't hired to be Christian Frost's personal secretary just because of my tits and ass. I knew the business just as well as they did, knew it inside and out. But if I wore anything even the least bit revealing, I heard the gossip. They'd all be talking about how lucky Mr. Frost was to have such a view, right outside his office.

So, I'd taken to dressing conservatively. No one had dared to say anything directly to me, but I wasn't going to give their watercooler gossip any more fuel. I was proud of my looks, but damn if I was going to let people think they were the reason I got my job.

Tonight was different though. Tonight, I could be someone else. I could flaunt myself in front of all of them, make them all feel the jealousy bubbling up inside. And none of them would have any idea who I was. None of them would ever expect the bombshell flaunting herself on the dance floor was sweet, innocent, Jade Walker.

And that was just the way I wanted it.

I worked my way around the room, never staying with any one guy for very long. I wanted them all to feel the stirrings inside them. When we got back to work on Monday, I wanted to hear what the gossip was saying, who they suspected the bombshell to really be.

It was funny how just a bit of makeup, a tiny mask, and some sexy clothes could completely change your appearance. A few of the men asked my name, but I just winked and smirked at them before slipping off toward the next guy. It was fun, letting the mystery build. Since every employee was required to attend the ball, I might as well have some fun with it, right?

That was until I danced right into Mr. Frost's arms. He grinned down at me, and my heart stopped beating all together. As I stared up into his eyes, I waited for a look of recognition. This was the one person I saw every single day, multiple times a day. If anyone was going to recognize me, it was going to be him.

Except, he didn't. He just grinned at me, licking his lips as his eyes roamed all over my body. There was a look of hunger in his eyes, one that made me shiver and want to run away. But I couldn't move. I was stuck rooted to that spot, staring up into his eyes.

Mr. Frost almost always had some pretty girl on his arm at these functions. But this time, he was alone. Had he not brought a date? Or had he sent her off
