But it didn't, since I had amazing staff working below me that were more than happy to pick up the slack. They'd all been nearly as excited about the babies as I was, and now that they were born, the staff all looked forward to the days when Gabbie and I would bring them into the office.
The day they'd been born, I'd called my secretary and arranged for her to get everything I would need to turn a corner of my office into a nursery for them. Because I couldn't stay away from work forever, no matter how badly I wanted to, and I sure as Hell wasn't going to be spending so much time away from the babies either.
Once she'd recovered from the birth, and once she was sure the babies wouldn't be left to be cared for by nannies, Gabbie even agreed to finally come work at the business with me. She hadn't wanted to when we'd first married, since she was just out of high school. She'd been afraid people wouldn't respect her, since she was inexperienced and the daughter of the founder and wife of the current CEO. But now that she was out of college, with a degree of her own, I'd finally been able to talk her into coming to work for us.
I'd have gladly given her any position she'd wanted. She was a major shareholder and knew the company almost as well as I did. But she'd only accepted a position as a junior marketing assistant, determined to work her way up the ladder just like everyone else did. I kept close tabs on her, and everyone was thrilled with her work so far. It wouldn't take long for her to work her way up the chain, and I was thoroughly enjoying working side by side with her, even if we didn't interact with each other much at work.
She really was an amazing woman. And I was glad we'd both finally worked things out together. Now, we could have a real marriage. One without secrets and filled with love. Now, we could have a family together.
