Minnie is Uncle Vinnie’s thee-year-old granddaughter who thinks she’s married to her stepfather because her mother, my cousin Jackie, thought it would be cute to have him put a ring on her finger, too, during their wedding ceremony.
“Great. I’m named after a legendary singer and an imaginary cat. I couldn’t have done better myself.”
“You keep up with the sharp tongue, little lady. You’re going to need it to survive. It’s a tough world out there. Even in Canada.” He wags a finger my way. “You’ll see how cold and unfeeling it is without the warm, strong arms of the family around you.”
“Yeah, well, the family wants me dead. I think I’ll take my chances with a bunch of cold, unfeeling Canadians.” I suck in my bottom lip as I look to my uncle for what feels like the very last time. “I love you.”
“I know.” He pulls me in and holds me for a small eternity, and I truly do feel the warm, strong arms of family around me. “If the burner phones don’t work out, we’ll find another way to communicate. The code word is meow.”
I make a face. “Another contribution from Minnie?”
He gives a somber nod.
And then, just like that, he turns me around and instructs me to run.
And run I do.
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to Canada I go.
Let’s hope I don’t run into Johnny Rizzo there or I’ll kill him.
And that’s one prognostication I can guarantee will come true.

Country Cottage Café
Jack-o-lantern Hand Pies
Bizzy Baker Wilder here! I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful autumn. It’s October here in Cider Cove and the Country Cottage Café is serving the most delectable dessert. If you want a surefire Halloween treat on your hands nothing tastes better than these pumpkin hand pies. The best part? They look exactly like miniature jack-o-lanterns. They are both adorable and delicious! Happy baking!
Ingredients
Filling:
1 can pumpkin
⅔ cup evaporated milk
⅓ cup sugar
¼ cup flour
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp ginger
½ tsp ground cloves
Crust:
2 ½ cups flour
1 stick cold butter cubed
½ tsp salt
1/3 to 2/3 cup ice water
Directions
Preheat oven to 350° (grease 9x13 pan with butter)
Filling
In a mixing bowl combine pumpkin, evaporated milk, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and ground cloves.
Crust
Blend butter, flour, and salt in a mixing bowl. Combine with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly.
Slowly add 1/3 cup cold water, kneading as you go. If needed, add a bit more water.
Place in the refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Once the 30 minutes are up, roll out the dough about 1/8 of an inch thick. Use either a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter or a sharp knife to cut out an even number of pumpkins about six inches wide.
Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and lay the bottom of the pumpkins out flat. On the other half of the pumpkin shapes cut out Jack-o-lantern faces with a sharp knife. Feel free to get creative and have some fun!
Dollop 2 tablespoons of pumpkin mixture to each bottom half of the pumpkin. Seal with the top of your jack-o-lantern. Secure edges with a fork to seal it up.
Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
