“I want to make sure I’m not too out of it to take care of you,” she said with a warm smile.
I blinked in surprise. “That’s really nice of you. You’re such a good friend.” I tried to walk towards her but stumbled on my long gown.
Abby laughed. “Whoa, I think we need something safer for drunk Kat to wear. I’ll be right back with another drink.”
I knew the alcohol was taking a toll because it took way too long to get out of that dress and get it back on the hanger. Abby still hadn’t come back, so I ran my hands over the dresses as I walked through the closet. I hated the fact that someone else thought they could control me by dictating my wardrobe, but these clothes were a lot nicer than anything I’d ever had before. Why should I let the clothes suffer by keeping them locked up in my closet? I nodded to myself as I pulled out a short dress made of the softest material I’d ever felt.
By the time Abby returned, I was dressed and dancing around my room to Flyleaf’s Fully Alive.
Abby giggled when she caught sight of me. “Come sit down before you get hurt.” She plopped down on the bed and fluffed the giant pink skirt around her. I sat cross-legged across from her and tried not to sway as the room moved around me.
“We forgot our drinks,” I pointed out once things were stationary again.
“Oh, yeah,” she laughed. Abby retrieved her glass and handed me the fresh drink that she made for me. “You’re going to want to sip on that,” she cautioned me. “Don’t gulp it down like the last one.”
Abby pulled out her phone and messed around with it before setting it between us. “Are you waiting for a call?” I asked curiously as I pointed to the phone. The screen was locked, so I couldn’t see what she’d been doing.
Surprise crossed her face, and then she looked embarrassed. “I was kind of hoping Trent would text,” she admitted. “I thought we had a connection.”
“Boys are stupid,” I announced.
“Right?” Abby agreed. “I mean, why would he want to miss out on all this?” She waved a hand over her body, and we both giggled.
“Have you ever played never have I ever?” Abby asked.
“Yeah, but never drunk,” I laughed.
“That makes it so much more fun,” she said mischievously.
“I’ll go first,” I told her. “Never have I ever been in love.”
She shrugged and drank. “I fell madly in love with this guy who used to go to our school.”
“Really? What happened?” I asked curiously.
“His parents decided he would be better off in a boarding school in Switzerland,” she explained. “We did the long-distance thing for maybe a month before it was obvious that it just wasn’t going to work.”
“That sucks,” I told her sympathetically.
She sighed. “Yeah.” Her eyes brightened up after a moment of silence. “My turn!” She tapped a finger on her chin thoughtfully. “Never have I ever had a one-night stand.”
I blanched but drank. Abby’s eyes almost burst out of her head. “No way! I never in a million years would have guessed that.”
“It was the first and only time I’d ever had sex,” I admitted. “I knew it was a huge mistake the moment we were alone in his room together.”
I looked down at the bed as the bad memories flashed through my mind.
“But it just happened so fast, and I thought it was too late for me to back out.” I looked up at Abby. “I wish I were one of those girls that were born a badass, but I had to work hard to get this tough,” I smirked at her. “Sometimes I look back at the girl I used to be and just want to shake some sense into her, you know?”
“I know,” Abby said softly. “But what about your boyfriend?”
I frowned in confusion. I’m sure I mentioned Ryan a couple of times when we were just talking about random stuff, but Abby never asked about him. I certainly never told her that he was my boyfriend.
“You mean Ryan?”
Abby nodded. “Yeah, you haven’t said much about him, and I’ve been kind of afraid to ask.” She hesitated. “I was worried you guys broke up when you moved here, and I wasn’t sure you were ready to talk about it.”
I giggled. “Yeah, I was pretty devastated to leave Ryan. But we’ve never dated.”
“Really?” she asked in disbelief.
“Really. Ryan has a huge crush on one of the guys that go to our school.”
“Ohhhh,” she said. “That makes so much sense. I wondered why his parents would be okay with you living in his room.”
My frown came back. I never talked to Abby about sharing a room with Ryan, I just said that I moved into his parent’s apartment. But it was getting more and more difficult to stay focused, and my thoughts were floating away only seconds after I had them.
Abby’s phone buzzed, and she quickly picked it up to read a text.
“Trent?” I asked.
She shook her head. “Nope.” She held her phone between us, but with the screen turned away from me so that I couldn’t see the message.
“If you need a minute, I don’t mind,” I told her with a sloppy smile.
“Nah,” she told me with a shake of her head. “Let’s keep playing. Your turn.”
“Never have I ever given a blow job,” I said with a grin.
Abby giggled and drank. “Sex but not oral?” Abby teased me.
I grimaced. “Yeah, I wasn’t kidding when I said it all happened too fast. I really wasn’t ready for that.”
“You need a redo,” Abby told
