taking her and Tom by the hand, they went to fill in the hole in the ground. Sally walked toward the kitchen. Maggie slipped her hand into her arm and walked with her.

“Are you feeling a little better than yesterday?” Maggie asked.

“I feel blessed, Maggie and so very lucky. Thanks to Trudi, I have two beautiful children. I have a good husband and wonderful friends and a charming home in a safe country.” Sally thought for a second. “All I need now is to deliver this baby safely and get Harry and Rachel home.”

Maggie turned to face her.

“Harry won’t be coming home anytime soon, Sally love. He has his own demons to chase.”

Sally frowned. “I hope Harry knows what he is doing. I know he hates the Nazis and blames them for the death of his father, but taking a life won’t bring him peace, will it?”

Maggie put her hand on Sally’s arm. “He’s got to figure that out for himself, Sally, you know that. The war isn’t over for him yet. But with any luck, he’ll find his way back home to you, just like Derek did.”

The End

About Rachel Wesson

Hi, I’m Irish living in England. I have a passionate interest in history, particularly relating to how women and children survived and thrived in different periods of time.

A reader once asked how I kept writing at my age – she assumed I had lived through war. My readers tell me my books make them laugh and cry. I love that. As a reader, I want to experience something when reading. When I’m not writing or reading, my family keeps me busy. Three children, and a husband keep me in London, where there are plenty of things to do,

I love chatting with readers. Come join us at https://www.facebook.com/groups/rachelwessonsreaders/
