to make a joke about why a guy like him didn’t look it up on his phone first before requesting a Lyft.  The guy told him a lot was going on and he thought he could just find it on his own like in the old days. The driver received a request from a friend to pick him up since he was close by and the man asked to get out and he would find it on his own instead of wasting time.  He drove to the location of his female friend who jumped in like the guy in the back leaped out.  She couldn’t believe he had the handsome tech genius in his car and she had seen him on television before.  They didn’t talk about him anymore until they heard about the dead man in our pool the next day on the news.  The Lyft driver felt obligated to talk to the police and asked Detective Wagner did the man have lots of thick hair and wore glasses.  Wagner told him the man had no glasses and was bald.  So the driver assumed it wasn’t the same guy he picked up the night before, but Wagner put the two together.”

“Is he going to arrest the Lyft driver too?”

“He hasn’t arrested him yet,” My Grandmother says.  “Eileen Villery and her niece, Marilynn are the ones he’s thinking about the most.  It irritates me to no end how he handles these cases.  His report states how Eileen stumbled through her whereabouts the night before on how she got home after leaving her garden club.  She got home at 9:30, but when he asked Marilynn, she remembers her getting back in about 10:30.  When the detective asked Eileen why is there an hour difference, she begins talking too much as she does when she’s nervous and says she went somewhere else before coming home. She can’t come up with any alibis for her time until she releases the fact that she likes to walk along the beach before coming home to deal with Mr. Villery and ran into a friend there, but didn’t see a friend.  That’s when her sweet niece, Marilynn interjects and admits she didn’t hear when her aunt came in but doesn’t offer an explanation as to why she didn’t hear her. Then, says she was over here helping me with Franklin. She apologizes for stating the time her aunt came in because it wasn’t right.  Both women began talking all at once leaving all of the officers eyeing them and Wagner believes they both did it.”

“Hearing all of that makes me wonder,” I say. “That’s a confusing story, but I can’t understand how Mrs. Villery and Marilynn could be tied up in this. I want to know where Mrs. Villery was that night, too. I can’t see her killing somebody.”

“I wonder where Mr. Alan York is or if he is dead. I feel so sad for his young family. My friend from the church has grandkids that are close friends to his children. She told us they are quite well off and Mr. York was a handsome man and his wife, Rachel, is a pretty girl. He is much more than a handsome face, he’s a genius with a successful company. Sally says they are a devoted couple.”

Why would Alan York run away from his life?

Sometimes a person is an angel in the world and a devil behind closed doors.

“I’m sure Alan York had some enemies around, we all do,” I say backing my chair away from the table.

“Oh yes, look at the times we live in, where everybody wants what they want when they want it, refuse to work for it, or have the patience to wait."

“Yes, I see it daily, Grandma,” I say gathering or plates to take into the kitchen. “Well, it’s been a long day and I have homework, so…”

My grandmother loves to see me doing my homework. She wants her money to result in me earning As and Bs at GA and give her a good return on her investment in my education.

Something she could never do for my mother. I’m giving her a second chance to meet that need.

“Make sure you eat a proper breakfast in the morning before you leave for the school,” she said watching Kaye walk out of the door.  “We can’t have you fainting anymore. I want you to be fueled up and ready to take down those subjects. I’m always praying for you, dear.”

“Thank you, Grandma.” I hug and kiss her before returning to the kitchen to load the dishwasher. “Kiss Grandpa for me.”

“I always do, dear.”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

MYLES

Ilike Aleta Saunders. I like her a lot. She and I could become good friends if Low wasn’t always around shoving his muscle in her face.

We have a few classes together without the fellas and I enjoy sitting next to her. I used to think all girls were silly and shallow like the Goodies Goodies, but she has proven me wrong. Aleta is intelligent and driven. She knows how to get things done and run over obstacles in her way. She is a tough one and I’m proud of how she’s handling herself. The rest of the group wants her thrown out of school, but I’m glad she’s around. We need a variety of personalities at GA.

She and her family are under a lot of pressure. She’s working in the café because the Goodies Goodies hate her guts.

I watch her grabbing a strawberry or a grape as she passes by the salad bar. There’s no way she’s not starving before the day is over. Her body is in perfect shape, so she can’t be dieting. The stress is getting to her and that’s not right.

Each day I see her, I know this is wrong. My father is a high powered attorney with one of the largest firms in the state. I have to help her.

“Maybe we can get something out of it but there’s
