“Doesn’t that get lonely?” She dragged her fingers over his zipper, a dreamy expression on her face. “A man has certain needs, Matt.”
“I do.” He all but growled the words.
“You’re such a handsome man. You shouldn’t be alone.”
He chuckled. “Not to burst your bubble, but I don’t spend a lot of time alone. You’re not the only one doing what you do.”
He’d expected her to pout. In fact, he’d chosen his words carefully in the hopes of getting a rise out of her. But she was unfazed. “I bet you can afford to have a lot of things men want. A woman to warm your bed. Women to keep you satisfied at night. The world is yours for the taking, right?”
“Yes.”
“What a powerful feeling.”
“It is.” He swallowed hard when her hand settled over his growing bulge. At this rate, he wouldn’t make it to the North Carolina state line. She was too beautiful, the things she was promising too much for him to wait. “A woman needs money to build her empire. I can give you that money, for certain services. Is that something you would like?”
Purring her agreement, she slid closer to him with lust in her eyes. “You’re right, I do need money, and there’s not much I wouldn’t do to get what I want.”
“Like I said, you’re smart.”
“I’m glad to hear you say that, Matt. In fact, I think you’ll be my first product.”
“Product?” He laughed. “Don’t you mean client?”
Her giggle was like rain on a hot summer day washing over him. The joy on her face was pure light, and every breath she took pushed him closer to the edge of reason. He wanted her now, but she was like fine wine—you didn’t just drink such a special treat all at once. Maybe he’d take his time with this one. Maybe he’d even keep her around for a few weeks. She was special, and the best part was, she knew it.
A glint of light hit his side-view mirror, the reflection of the midday sun on the windshield of a car moving over the solid double stripe between the lanes to pass him.
Matt scanned the horizon, making sure the road was clear. There was no way he was going to waste time stopping to report an accident today. Katarina had appeared in the exact moment he needed to slake his thirst, and no reckless driver in a no-passing zone was going to ruin it. If they didn’t die in a head-on collision, Matt might get out and kill them with his bare hands.
The image made him smile.
When the car was even with his window, he blinked, surprised to see a cherry red Altima linger for a moment before speeding by them.
He tilted his head to study Katarina, motioning to the car that was quickly pulling ahead of his rig. “Wasn’t that your car?”
She lifted a shoulder in a lazy shrug. “There are so many red cars.”
She was right, but he couldn’t shake the sudden feeling that he’d been duped. For what reason, he didn’t know, but he was going to have to keep an eye on this woman. Obviously, she was more than he’d bargained for when he’d stopped to pick her up, and the realization left him bubbling with excitement. Maybe she and a partner had a plan, but they didn’t know what they were up against.
Matt had seen more cons than he could count, and this young woman was mid-twenties at most. There was no way she was going to catch him unaware. But the fact that she might try excited him.
If his hunch was right, and someone had hidden in the car and planned to ambush him, he would take care of that and go back to his original plan. Maybe even bring the friend along, if it was another woman, though Katarina would remain his primary focus.
Katarina was special. He could feel it. It had been a very long time since anyone had affected him like Katarina did.
He was glad she was going to be the one.
She was perfect.
He couldn’t wait to get to Richmond.
