“I wish this moment would never end,” Jenny said softly. “For once everything is right with the world.”
“No,” Blade said, not wanting to spoil her mood and yet unwilling to deny the truth, “it isn’t.”
“You’re referring to the Lords of Kismet?”
“Who else?”
Jenny raised her head. “You don’t think they will leave us alone?”
“I think,” Blade said, “they’ll want us destroyed more than ever.”
“Because you escaped? Because you showed they can be beaten?”
“Power mongers can’t stand to be thwarted,” Blade said. “They’ll want to crush us to show everyone that no one stands up to them with impunity.”
“What can we do?” Jenny grasped his right hand in both of hers. “Please don’t tell me you’re going back over with more Warriors.”
“Rest easy,” Blade said. “The Lords of Kismet are too entrenched and spread out over too large an area for us to defeat them with a direct assault. Three Warriors or fifteen, it wouldn’t make a difference. But Yama has an idea that might work.”
“Tell me.”
Blade settled back against the tree. “We know the Lords of Kismet didn’t appear until after World War Three. They claim to have been living underground for centuries, and that they’re the Hindu gods of old.”
“Do you believe that’s true?”
“Let’s just say I have my doubts,” Blade said. “But one thing we do know. When they first appeared, they were all together. If we can insert Warriors at that exact place and time, maybe we can wipe them out in one fell swoop.”
“Wait a minute,” Jenny said. “They first showed up, what, a century ago?”
Blade nodded.
“So by ‘insert’, you mean you’re thinking of going back in time a hundred years?
“Give or take, yes.”
“But Tesla says that tampering with the time stream is dangerous. Going back a few minutes is one thing. Over a century is another. All sorts of terrible things can happen.”
“There’s that,” Blade said.
“The Spirit preserve us,” Jenny said, and pressed herself to him, squeezing hard. “I want you to promise you’ll come back to us. Promise that you won’t leave Gabe and me without the man in our life we love the most.”
“I promise,” Blade said. And crossed his fingers.
