Ah well. Quality problems.
Second of all, none of us particularly had the stomach for going off on some grand adventure. We had all nearly died facing down Weaver, and we needed our own time to rest and recuperate.
Fieria discussed it with me and the others. She said that she knew the larger tribe was still out there, and that there was the possibility of going to rejoin them… but that she was happy to stay where we were for right now.
Everyone else voted, and it was unanimous: for the time being, we decided to stay in the cave and the valley.
We were safe and happy, and that’s really all you can ask for in life.
And third of all… there was going to be a new addition to our group.
I noticed it one morning after having sex with Lelia. We were lying in the cave alone; the others had already set off into the forest to begin the day’s hunt and foraging.
“Too many berries,” I teased her as I pinched a bit of skin over her hip.
“What?” she asked, confused.
I laughed and decided not to be an asshole. I actually liked her with a little more meat on her bones; her already full breasts had grown even bigger, and I wasn’t going to complain about that.
“Nothing,” I said as I kissed her. “You have just gained a little weight – which is good.”
She suddenly got a shy expression on her face – something halfway between a smile and a Um, should I tell him? look.
“What?” I asked.
She hesitated… then took my hand and placed it on her stomach.
“Baby,” she whispered.
I stared at her, dumbfounded. “…baby?”
She smiled and nodded.
“Are you sure?” I asked, still shocked.
“Yes.” She suddenly looked concerned. “Is that bad?”
“What?! No – no, it’s good – it’s very, very good, I just – I’m surprised…”
I just hadn’t thought it was possible. I mean, DNA and chromosomes and blue skin and all that –
But I had died in an avalanche, come back to life on another planet, and found love with a blue-skinned elf in a wintry world.
Our DNA matching up was probably small potatoes compared to that.
Suddenly the enormity of what she was telling me sank in.
Babies –
Children –
A life together.
Like what I had wanted with Katie.
I was finally going to have it.
I knew Katie had to be looking out for me, because none of this would have been possible if I hadn’t survived that jump during the second avalanche.
I had prayed for a miracle… and I’d gotten it.
A miracle, and a whole new life.
My eyes misted up with emotion.
Lelia’s eyes widened. “Are you okay?” she asked, placing a hand gently against my cheek.
“I’m better than okay – I’m terrific,” I said, then laughed. “I’ve never been better.”
She smiled at my joy and laughed herself.
A jumble of thoughts tumbled through my head.
A child on the way –
Women to protect –
A home to build –
People to provide for –
But I knew that could wait.
For right now, I wanted to savor the moment – the moment I found out I was going to be a father.
I kissed Lelia passionately… and we made love again.
Life was good.
Very, very good indeed.
