“I think I may have rubbed off on you a bit.” She laughed. “But that's not the point. Derek's in New York.”
I shrugged my shoulders. “It's a large state, I doubt I'll ever seen him.”
“He's moving into our apartment complex.”
“When did you find this out?”
“He called me yesterday. I only picked up because he sent a text first. He said you'd forgotten something important, and asked for a forwarding address.”
“And you gave it to him? You didn't think that he'd try something underhanded like this?” I asked, with frustration.
“To be fair, I was drinking!” She snapped. “Adam, and I were doing body shots, and I sent the text without even thinking. When he called he sounded sad, so I let him know that you were good. I even told him about Owen. Although, I think I may have called him 'sexy tattoo record guy,' but I can't be sure.”
“I'm assuming Adam, is the tow truck driver?”
“Yes!” She said, excitedly. “Speaking of, you weren't the only one who had an amazing night last night.” She winked.
“Can we get back on topic please?”
“Right. Sorry. Like I said I may have said too much, but that's why I'm warning you.”
I sighed. “What's done is done. Can I please get dressed now? We need to find out when we can pick the truck up.”
“It's already here. Adam, and I brought it back this morning.”
“You could have led with that.”
She shrugged her shoulders. “All that matters is, we have our ride back. That, and you've been effectively warned about your slimy ex. I'd say this day is starting to look up.”
I gave her a deadly look, and without another word she stepped aside so that I could finally exit the bathroom. I was beyond angry. I tried to brush it off as if I weren't, but I knew that it was written all over my face. I had made the decision to block, and delete Derek's number. I'd made the decision that we were over. I was ready to move on. I was actively trying to move on, and now when we finally got to New York I'd be starting all over again.
I didn't even know why Derek was moving there in the first place. Initially, he was only going to be with me. His job was back home in Raleigh, and as far as I knew there was no where to transfer to other than Indiana. This had to be some convoluted plan to win me back, and instead of giving me butterflies it only made me mad. Just when things started to look up for me, of course he'd come rearing his cheating head.
Every ounce of confusion I had about our relationship had vanished. I knew that I made the right choice, and it wasn't just because of Owen. I think I knew all along that we weren't right for each other. I always wanted more than he could give me. I used to think that I set my standards too high. I know that men in real life, are nothing like the ones in romance novels, but there are men out there who care. Men who take the time to understand your feelings, and help you work through them. Men like Owen Foster.
As if the mere thought of him was enough to summon him to me, Morgan unlocked the door and let him inside. His hair was still damp, and he wore his signature pair of black jeans with the rips in them. He gave me a sly smile, and I blushed before packing my dirty clothing into a large garbage bag.
“We need to find a laundry mat.” I said lifting the heavy bag, and dragging it towards the corner of the room.
“I was thinking.” Owen said, as he sat down on the end of the bed. “Since it's already so late in the afternoon, and we lost so much time yesterday. Why don't we stay in Maryland for the day? We can head to New Jersey first thing in the morning.”
“I'm going to call Adam!” Morgan squealed, as she dug around in her purse for her phone.
“Adam?” Owen asked, directing the question towards me.
“The tow truck driver.” I answered back, as I continued to organize my suitcase.
“I guess that just leaves the two of us.” He said, as he came to stand behind me.
He placed his hands on my waist, and tilted his head so that his chin was resting in the crook of my neck. I instantly stiffened completely aware of where we were, and who was with us. Morgan was facing away from us, staring out the window while she spoke with Adam on the phone. Owen took advantage of this, and placed a feather soft kiss just on the base of my neck.
I closed my eyes, and dropped the shirt I was folding back into my suitcase. I felt his hands slowly start to rise up from my waist, stopping just under my breasts.
“You smell so damn good, Unicorn.” He whispered.
“I, you-” I tried to answer back, but I couldn't form the words.
His warm breath on my neck was sending tingles to all the right places, and if Morgan wasn't in the room I probably would have turned around and shoved him back onto the bed. He pulled away from me then, reclaiming his seat on the end of the bed just as Morgan ended her phone call. Had he been paying attention to her conversation? How could he focus? My mind, and body were both still reeling from the minuscule contact that we'd just shared.
“Adam's picking me up in an hour!” Morgan said, pulling her makeup bag from her purse.
“That's great.” I said, pretending that I wasn't so worked up that I could explode.
“Oh.” Morgan said, spinning to face me. “I'm sorry, did you want to do something today? I know we haven't spent much time together on this trip. I can totally
