But I feel healthy.
Loobey took a shaky step towards the shed door. It wasn’t weakness that caused him to shake, it was energy. He was a bag of nervous electricity. A firework ready to explode.
He shoved open the shed door and leapt into the weak sunshine. The day was cold, but he barely felt it. The blood in his veins ran hot. The colours of the world almost overwhelmed him. The greens, the oranges, the greys. They seemed to shimmer and vibrate, begging for his attention. Only when he focused did the colours remain still. The air was like crisp ice chips in his lungs.
It was only when his gaze fell upon Brett’s body, twisted and distorted the same as Sean’s, that the euphoria began to fade away. His friends were dead. Brett, Sean, most likely Tom too.
My friends are all dead.
No. Ryan and Aaron got away. They’re alive.
I need to find them.
Loobey turned a circle for a moment, finding it hard to put his thoughts in order. He needed to get to the village, but which way was it?
The road. Just follow the road. The road leads to the village.
And people.
Yes, people.
Loobey took the first step, and then he was moving, almost at a jog. His lungs and heart pumped happily, full of vigour. Full of life. He would make it to his destination in no time. But halfway down the hill, toward the stream, Loobey slowed down. A fox stood staring at him, half its face covered by green fuzz. Beside the fox stood a massive brown hare, also partially covered in fuzz. In the distance, an owl hooted – strange for that time of day. The fox and the hare continued eyeing Loobey up for a few more seconds, then they turned away, uninterested.
Loobey let out a sigh of relief and picked up speed again. He didn’t know why the animals didn’t attack like those inside the cottage, but he wasn’t going to complain. Maybe the fungus affected individual animals in different ways.
Ryan and Aaron will get help. We’ll figure all this out. Someone will know what’s going on. Someone will make all this better.
Loobey started running. He needed to get to the village. He needed to find his friends.
He needed to find people.
