“What is plan B?”
Kya screamed from the door, “Yassa get your ass up and open it. We are gonna die if you don’t.”
“Sure, it’s my fault we haven’t opened it. Thanks, Kya, love you too. We don’t even know what’s inside this fucking thing.”
The door was not slowing down with shaking and looking like it could come off its hinges at any second. The Turned knew what was on the other side and they knew that meant a warm meal if they got in. They would not stop until they got exactly what they craved...at least not for a very long time. Pete was going to tell him but Yassa seemed perfectly content with the thought that living was more important than getting questions answered. Yassa knew that he could open the door; he just needed to think of it a bit more intelligently. He pulled a knife from his pocket and a bandana from the other. Pete said, “What in the hell are you going to do with that?”
He cut it in two handing him the two pieces. Pete realized they were makeshift temporary bandages. Next, he stuck the knife into the crack which was keeping them off out of the closet. Pete said through clenched teeth as he was doing a piss-poor job of wrapping his fingers until Ellie, who'd been Lou’s nurse-in-training at the base clinic took charge and tied them off like a pro. She was still not the biggest fan of blood and didn’t care to see the tips of the bandana turn red. Pete said, “Hey...it isn’t going to fit, just forget it, maybe we can figure something else out.”
Yassa got it wedged into the crack until it got stuck. Pete was going to say I told you so until the man looked up and his dark eyes could not have been wilder and crazier. Pete took a step back and prayed to God that this insane man was not going to be responsible for killing them all. He put both hands on the rifle and brought it directly into the butt of the knife. It disappeared into the steel and Yassa brought it down a second time into the top of the blade as hard as he could. He was pretty sure that the word Colt or property of the U.S. Army was going to be imprinted on his palm when he was done and did not care.
The fact that he was going to fail twice was not something that had crossed his mind. The knife moved down forcing its way through the steel lock. The doors opened slowly to everyone but Yassa’s surprise. Pete was going to say something and Yassa hobbled up to the doors opening them. He wasn’t quite sure what it was that he was looking at but realized pretty damn quickly there was a lot of it. Pete walked forward smiling and wasted no time going to town on his plan. He pulled safety pins from the top. Yassa said, “Were you going to explain to us what you are thinking, or do we just get to trust the complete stranger?”
“You know what a bomb is?”
Yassa nodded his head slowly and when Pete looked up realized that he most definitely had every person’s attention in the room. Joe said, “So you are setting off a bomb, and where the fuck are we planning on going during this? How is it going to get set off?”
Pete said, “I’m going to fill this room full. There’s enough in here to fill this floor with gas. We use it to run the lab equipment when we need fire. They don’t ever want to be low, especially if there are shortages on it.”
Ellie said, “Nope, no way in hell this is a good idea. I’d rather just break the windows and make a dead sprint for the Humvee.”
“Why is that, you don’t even know the outcome,” Pete who didn’t know enough about Ellie and her life to be able to say something so wrong.
Ellie, who should have been freaking out and on the verge of an emotional breakdown like any rational human would be, began to laugh hysterically. In true Ellie fashion she said, “Look, you little science nerd. Glad to have you and all but I assure you that you don’t know what you are talking about. Day two instead of sitting inside and waiting for people to come rescue us we had to go to where it all started. If you didn’t notice we lived, and have every day since then. When we went to town to try and save a boy...a guy in our group, Shaun, thought a bomb was the perfect answer...wow, was he wrong. Do you know what happens when you set off a bomb, especially one like you are planning to use?”
“It explodes?”
“Ah, ha ha very funny, thank you. No, it rings a dinner bell like you’ve never heard before. You don’t realize that when the Turned hear that, those who weren’t already here and ready to eat us would be here in a matter of minutes. They don’t waste any time and they won’t hesitate a second about coming after and killing us, or worst making us one of them.”
“We don’t have many options,” Pete tried to explain.
“Well, that doesn’t mean that we need to pick a shitty one just because we don’t have a lot of ideas.”
Pete shook his head, if he lived through this, then he would be right, and if not, then at least he tried. Pete pulled the last safety pin off before he had a hissing sound that was coming out so fast you could see it filling the room or at least floating around in it. Joe yelled, “We don’t have room for this, you two. Pete you’re going to poison us, Christ, everyone get by
