“Wait! What?”
Someone sniggered behind her. Levi offered her a wink. Bastard… That was what they’d been chatting about outside? She spun to Gunn. “You were in on this, too?”
“Sis,” Chase said as he held on to her shoulder, turning her toward him, “no one told me. I was passing a window in my room when I saw you two kissing. You think I didn’t notice how you both ogled each other every time you were over? And… a few of the guys might have confirmed it.”
Levi cleared his throat.
“So, you don’t have an issue with it?” she asked.
“Nope. But if Gunn hurts you in any way, then I’ll have a massive problem,” Chase explained.
“And you won’t see my whooping coming your way, Gunn,” their grandma added, bringing everyone to laughter.
The room filled with the sound, and Cyra hugged her brother. “Thank you, Chase. For always looking out for me and letting me stay here. For introducing me to Gunn.”
He leaned closer to her ear and whispered, “Why do you think I asked Gunn to go help you on your first mission?”
His confession rattled her. This whole time she’d judged her brother wrong, and it turned out he, of all people, had played matchmaker. “Love you so much.”
The others carried platters of food to the table while Gunn approached Chase, who slapped his back. “I won’t stand in your way, but if you hurt her, I’m coming for you with a sledgehammer.”
“You don’t have to worry about me,” Gunn said as Cyra leaned against him.
Was this happening? For too long she’d felt wedged in the middle, aimless. Now her future seemed unstoppable.
“Okay, are we going to eat or just yak all day?” Maddon asked. “Otherwise, I would have spent Christmas at my stepdad’s place.” He grinned easily, though Cyra knew that, ever since Maddon’s mother passed, his stepdad had been a major jerk, trying to take over all Maddon’s family assets. The ones that rightfully belonged to Maddon.
Everyone made a beeline for the food.
Cyra sat next to Gunn, her grandma on the other side. She grasped his hand. Around her was a group of people who had difficult pasts, who for different reasons were alone this Christmas, but together they became a family. And she wouldn’t exchange the time with them for anything.
Gunn dragged her chair closer to him and kissed her head. “Baby girl, this is the best Christmas ever!”
She met the softness in his eyes, the sexiness of his lips, the gruff of his stubble. And her thoughts drifted to their sex marathon over the last week, how they went out shopping, to the movies, to restaurants… just being normal and she loved every second of it. Now, she couldn’t believe her luck because she’d found her perfect mate. There was nothing broken about him… not a single thing.
“Okay, we had a tradition growing up on the farm,” Chase said, standing up at one end of the table as his gaze landed on their grandma and Cyra. “We go around and each of us must give someone else here an award based on that person’s behavior. It’s all in jest and about having fun. Let’s start with Levi. I’m suggesting he gets an award for the ‘Most Serious Hunter’ and ‘Bagging the Most Demons.’”
Levi shifted in his seat and scratched his head. “The first part doesn’t sound like me.”
Everyone burst into laughter. “Man, that’s you all right,” Saxon butted in. “Okay, do me next. I’ll say, I get an award for ‘Rescuing the Hottest Chick.’ You know, the redhaired one from three months ago.”
Cyra and her grandma exchanged looks and waggled their eyebrows. Grandma was open-minded and not a prude, but then again, she had raised Chase, so that was obvious. He used to have a different girlfriend every week at school.
“Ha,” Maddon murmured. “More like ‘The Hunter Who Talks So Much, He Scares Away Demons.’”
“Yes,” Cyra said. “I would believe that.”
“Hey, you’re supposed to be on my side.” Saxon threw a bread roll at her.
She caught it with one hand, then bit into it.
“And Chase,” Gunn said, “yours should be ‘Hunter Who Breaks All Of Argos’ Equipment.’ You’ve lost ten lassos already.”
The chuckles intensified, and Cyra’s mouth hurt from smiling. This cheer and bonding was what she would have missed if she hadn’t survived her encounter with the demon in the house.
Gunn had his arm around her shoulders, and everyone dove into the food as they exchanged stories about hunting. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt more loved. With Gunn by her side, her life was just beginning.
