The evil spirit took its place to ponder on the evil he was planning to subject the people to and went to sleep with a grin on his wrinkly dry lips, and he looked like a corpse, with gored eyes in his skeletal frame, same as his fellow evil spirit beings he was with. The spirits could not venture out of their hiding place as they did not yet devour human flesh and blood. That was why they stayed put in the caves to stay alive until they had had a feed and regained enough strength to go on a rampage against humans.
Meanwhile the people of Goza and all the neighbouring villages were in perfect harmony without a care in the world. What they didn’t know was the immense evil brewing under the earth, about to be unleashed to wipe out the human race once again. Whether or not the people would survive this evil about to be unleashed from the depths of the Baminga Mountains was left unknown.
In the meantime, the evil spirits would lie in wait for the opportune moment to attack the people and consume them. Another thing the people in the villages did not know was that these monsters were aware of their existence and that they would be easy prey as long as they were not aware of the concoction that they could use to kill them easily with one sip.
However, the spirits were not aware that this generation of people was not the same as the former and would not apply the same conventional methods of killing evil spirits as the people of old tried and failed. If the people could pray fervently, the Angel Armies of the Lord from heaven would come and rescue them. But as it stands, no one knew how to pray or what to say because they didn’t know if even there was a God in heaven who could protect them.
Chapter 13
Mara felt a tug at her heart as she slept in her bed. At first, she thought she heard her dead mother’s voice telling her to wake up. As she sat up in her bed to listen to the voice, she realised that it was a stranger’s voice that she had never heard before, but the voice was calm and polite.
She rubbed sleep off her eyes as if to see who was talking to her, but there was nobody there except for the voice talking to her. The voice said, “Mara, my child, do not be afraid, I have come here to warn you that the people in this village are in great danger of the evil spirits that devour the living.”
The angel continued, “They all must learn how to pray to protect themselves, and you are the ‘Chosen One’ to teach them how to pray for all your sakes, or you shall be consumed by the evil spirits. The God who sent me is your God whom you do not know, He created you, He knows you and He knows your parents and the rest of the people on earth.”
The voice went on to tell her to write down the prayer word for word for all to practice until they had memorised it off head. Mara did not question anything and she did not fear, instead she became courageous that she should act accordingly to save her people and her brothers too.
She was also told by the voice not to share this secret with anyone and keep it to herself, but she should make sure that everyone would learn how to pray when she was instructed by the Angel to teach them. This was to give Mara time to get used to the idea and to learn the prayer herself before she could teach the others.
She asked how she was going to convince them to pray without telling them the reason behind it, since she was only a child herself. The angel told her that he would return at an appointed time and would make them believe and those who would harden their hearts would perish. He said they would be consumed alive by the evil spirits.
The angel told her that it was only prayer that would provide a protective shield against the spirits and they would not come near. The Angel also mentioned the importance of praying for salvation so that one’s soul would not go to hell fire but saved into eternal life.
At that moment, Mara was taken back to her dreams where she found herself being placed in a pan over a big fire by Mama Haga and wondered if there was any connection between that dream and what the angel was saying. She agreed to take on this mission and she asked him if her parents were safe and he said they were and that one day they would meet again and live together once more.
She was happy with that prospect and wished it was now that she would reunite with her parents, but the angel told her she had to complete her secret mission first before she saw her parents again one day. Mara thought to herself, All I ever wanted to be was a princess not an angel. At that moment, she found herself being shaken by her brother, Baka, who overheard her talking and thought she was having her nightmares again and sleep talking.
She asked him if he had heard anything she had said and he said he only heard her mumbling and couldn’t quite catch what she was saying and he shook his head and told her with annoyance, “You were sleep talking again, and you woke me up! Thanks a lot, Mara!”
Mara thought to herself, That
