sorry.” Kevin just kept saying that over and over.

“Hey useless, tear up that sheet and stop her bleeding,” Ajax yelled.

“I’m sorry,” Kevin said.

“Kevin, quit saying you’re sorry,” Samantha gritted out. “Get the sheet.”

She wanted to cry. It hurt so bad. She knew she’d fallen on a petri dish of germs, she was sure to get an infection.

Kevin dragged the entire sheet across the room and started to tear it into strips. He made a pad then turned Sam sideways so he could see the bullet wound.

“Sam, the bullet is still in your arm. This is really going to hurt.” He pressed the makeshift bandage against her arm, then tied the tourniquet around it. She somehow bit back a scream. That was the last thing she remembered before passing out.

Ezio got off the phone with Toni. “She’s questioned everyone at the office. Apparently, the receptionist saw her last.”

Leo, Asher, Kane, and Ezio were standing around Ezio’s kitchen island where Kane had set up his laptop.

“The receptionist saw her as she was leaving for the day,” Asher guessed.

“Nope, down in the lobby. She and her boyfriend were watching out for Samantha because her ex, Kevin had shown up to work that morning and they wanted to make sure he didn’t try to harass her that night.”

“They saw her get into an Uber. But after the car drove off, they realized it was suspicious because it was being handled by two men. A driver and someone opening the door for Sam. After that, a second Uber came up, parked briefly, and then drove off.”

“Yeah, that sure as hell stinks to high heaven,” Kane agreed.

“Could Kevin have taken her?” Kane asked.

“The receptionist said Kevin wasn’t one of those two men,” Ezio explained. “So, I don’t think so.”

“From everything Eden’s ever said about Kevin, he’s not the type,” Asher said.

“So we’re back to the poker game,” Kane mused.

“Leo, let me talk to your brother. I need to get that Vice cop’s information so I can talk to him.” Ezio knew he sounded desperate—because he was.

Leo looked up from his phone where he’d been texting. “Already on it. I’ve texted Martin and he’s already texted me back. I’m sending the detective’s info to your phone.” Leo assured Ezio.

“Can’t you track the last place Samantha’s phone was before it was turned off?” Asher asked Kane.

“It hasn’t been turned off,” Kane said grimly. “If I had to guess, the SIM card has been destroyed. You’re dealing with real professionals this time, or they knew how you tracked her last time and learned from it.”

Ezio’s phone buzzed with the cop’s information. He called Sy’s cell phone number.

“This is Detective Morgan.”

Ezio put it on speaker so the rest of the team could hear.

“This is Ezio Stark. Samantha Brooks was abducted yesterday, outside her office in Norfolk. She got into an SUV that claimed to be her Uber.”

“How do you know it wasn’t?”

“It was the last time anybody ever saw or spoke to her. Since then, the SIM card in her phone has been destroyed and we have no way of tracking her.”

There was a long pause.

“You realize this is good news, don’t you?” Sy Morgan asked.

“Yes,” Ezio said reluctantly. “She could have been killed outright instead. The fact that they kidnapped her means we still have a chance at rescuing her.”

“Exactly.”

“It’s the game-runner, who has her. Have Carl or Murray told you anything about him yet?” Ezio demanded to know.

“No, they seem too afraid.”

“Why?”

“That’s my question too.” Sy’s voice was filled with frustration. “Normally guys like these would have rolled by now.”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Kane talking to Asher and then picking up his phone and making a call.

“Sy, keep me informed if anything else changes, okay?”

“I’m putting out an all-points bulletin for Samantha after we get off this call. I want her found, and I’m going to get more men involved on finding the game-runner.”

“I appreciate that.” Ezio wanted off the phone to find out what Kane was doing.

“You’ve got it. I’ll call you the minute something pops,” Sy assured him.

“Thanks.”

Ezio pressed end on his phone. Then he motioned to Kane, who put down his phone and put it on speaker. A young-sounding girl was speaking.

“…my boyfriend Brody and I both saw her get into the SUV.”

“Can you describe it? Can you describe the men?” Kane asked easily.

Ezio understood that Kane didn’t want to scare the girl, he wanted to keep her talking.

“I can describe the guy who was holding open the door for Samantha. He was about her height in her heels, so maybe five-ten. He was white, and wearing a terrible off-the-rack black suit, white shirt, black tie, and his shoes were wrong, they had rubber soles. The other I didn’t get too good of a look of, because he just went from the back seat to the driver’s seat. Everything was off. But what would you expect with Uber drivers?”

“There were two of them?” Ezio asked sharply.

“Yeah, Brody thought that was weird, too. I told Toni when she asked me, because he had mentioned it.”

“You’re sure neither of them was Kevin, right?” Kane asked.

“Oh no, Brody would have recognized that dweeb. For sure.”

“Can you tell us anything about the SUV?” Ezio asked.

“It was black with tinted windows.”

“Do you know the make? The model?” Kane’s voice was almost gentle.

“No, I don’t know those kinds of things. Brody might. It did have a dent in the front with red paint on it. Do you want me to call Brody?”

“That would be great. Can you call us back as soon as possible?” Again, Kane’s request was soft, trying not to upset the witness.

“Sure. Oh yeah, I don’t know
