“I thought you said we were going to take this nice and slow,” he said.
“I changed my mind. We can take it nice and slow next time. Get your clothes off.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He shrugged out of his shirt, easy to do since she’d already unbuttoned it. She worked at his belt until she freed it, then moved her fingers to the button of his jeans. When that was undone and his zipper down, she helped him shuck them down. He kicked them off the end of the bed.
“Better?”
“Not quite.” She tugged at the waistband of his boxer briefs, then gave a hard yank, setting him free. “Now we’re getting somewhere.”
“You’re insatiable.”
“You have no idea.” Stella tugged him back down on top of her and sighed when he settled his weight against her. When her hands slid to his waist, and then lower still, he knew what she was asking.
“You really stopped using birth control?”
“You said you didn’t mind a couple of months ago. I was tracking things to make sure we didn’t accidentally get pregnant until enough time had gone by and I could check with you.”
“I don’t mind. I’m happy,” he assured her. “I know for sure I want this. You sure?” He had to check.
“Positive. It’s funny—since I was on the pill this isn’t going to be different from what we always do, but it feels like it will be different.”
“It will be; I’ve got to work extra hard to get this job done.” When she grinned up at him, he grinned back.
“I sure hope so,” she told him.
If he hadn’t been hard before, he certainly would be now, but the truth was he’d been aching since they’d been back in town. “You want things fast, right?”
“You got it. Start slow, then go fast,” she corrected.
“Will do.” Steel nudged himself against her, and they both sighed. Their lovemaking was always satisfying to him, but he knew this night would be special—and so would the rest of their nights together. As he pushed inside her, his desire grew. They were making a family—a baby. Right now, maybe. Soon at any rate, if the stars aligned. He and Stella would bring a new life into the world through this testament to their love.
“What’s wrong?” Stella whispered.
“Nothing. It’s… everything’s right.” His voice was husky, but his emotion hadn’t unmanned him in any way. If anything, his resolve grew and his pace increased.
Stella moved with him, biting her lip, matching his pace, her hips meeting his. When she closed her eyes and arched back, he knew she was giving herself to him utterly, giving him leave to make love to her, to lead this excursion into the next phase of their lives.
Steel paced himself, wanting to make this last, but the sight of her body bared to him, the feel of her surrounding him, the heat and sweet friction and the desire inside him to give her everything overcame his control. Steel plunged into her, gathering her close in his arms, and she tangled her fingers in his hair, urging him on with her whispered pleadings and the lift of her hips to meet his.
When Steel felt her crashing over the edge into her release, he followed with her, bucking against her, crushing her to him, riding the wave of their orgasms together toward the shore.
They collapsed in a tangled heap afterward, both of them breathing hard, and when Stella laughed, Steel joined in.
“I don’t know why I’m surprised how damn good that feels every single time.”
“I don’t know why I’m surprised every time I wake up in the morning and you’re still here and I’m still here and this house is still here,” he answered.
“We’re so lucky,” Stella said. “And soon we’re going to share that luck with our baby.”
“You think you’re pregnant yet?”
“Not yet. Rest up a minute, then we’ll try again.”
He’d try as many times as it took, Steel resolved. And then he’d try some more for good measure.
Steel rolled over and fished out the champagne he’d squirreled away in a cooler. When he pulled out two glasses and filled them, Stella looked impressed.
“Look at you thinking ahead.”
“I know how to treat a woman.”
“You do.” She took a glass from his hand.
“To all of us,” Steel said. “You. Me. Our baby. Our family. To Chance Creek, too.”
“To all of us.” Stella took a sip. “And to another wonderful year together.”
“I’ll drink to that.”
And he did.

Prologue
Four months ago
On the first of February, General Augustus Reed entered his office at USSOCOM at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, placed his battered leather briefcase on the floor, sat down at his wide, wooden desk and pulled a sealed envelope from a drawer. It bore the date written in his wife’s beautiful script, and the General ran his thumb over the words before turning it over and opening the flap.
He pulled out a single page and began to read.
Dear Augustus,
It’s time to think of our daughters’ future, beginning with Cass.
The General nodded. Spot on, as usual; he’d been thinking about Cass a lot these days. Thinking about all the girls. They’d run yet another of his overseers off Two Willows,
